Imphal, June 02 2013: Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA) has submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking his direction and intervention in the matter of prevailing drug trafficking cases mostly indulged in by security forces, high level Government officials and family members of VIPs in Manipur.

The memorandum said that Manipur serves as the gateway to the Golden Triangle as such the Government needs to be ever vigilant, serious and sincere in checking the menace of drug trafficking.

It further said that a large quantity of pseudoephedrine tablets worth around Rs 1.4 crore brought in Air Deccan cargo was detected by Inspector K Ranjit and his staff of Special Investigation Unit (SIU) on January 11 this year at Tulihal Airport.

Saying that the owner of the said consignment has not been identified uptil now whereas SIU was disbanded by the Government on January 15, the memorandum demanded that the involved persons be identified and awarded exemplary punishment at the earliest.

The organisation also demanded that SIU be reinstated and K Ranjit be brought back to the same post.

The memorandum further said that Defence PRO Col Ajay Chaudhury along with five persons including Assistant Manager of Indigo Airlines Security Staff were arrested by a team of Thoubal district police commandos for smuggling a large quantity of pseudoephedrine tablets with Rs 25 crore at Pallel on February 24 this year.

Further investigation had confirmed that the Colonel had transported a huge quantity of drugs to Moreh in December last year as well, the memorandum said.

Sitting Congress MLA TN Haokip’s son Seikholen Haokip was arrested from his residence by police for possessing drugs, the memorandum said and added that 11 State security personnel were also arrested from Pallel by Thoubal district police commandos while trying to smuggle out a huge consignment of drugs to Moreh on April 28 .

On investigation, it was revealed that the consignment was being carried by the security team at the instruction of Sub Inspector Binorjit, who is the OC in-charge of Moreh Commando Unit, the memorandum said.

Despite the prevailing situation, the memorandum said, the State Government is remaining as a mere helpless spectator when a large section of the Government officials seem to involve in such abominable practice.
