SIKKIM WITNESSED TRANSIT OF VENUS, 2012


One of the rarest of predictable celestial phenomena

The 2012 transit of Venus, when the planet Venus appeared as a small, dark disk moving across the face of the Sun, began at 22:09 UTC on 5 June 2012, and finished at 04:49 UTC on 6 June.
 In Sikkim, India, it took place from 7 am till 10.20 am of 6th June.

The Sikkim State Council of Science and Technology (SSCST) had provided an arrangement for watching  this wonderful view of transit of venus across the sun at white hall complex. The awesome spectacle was also witnessed by the people of Sikkim in different places. 
SSCST had also provided Safe Solar Viewers  and awareness programme to the students of various schools.
The last transit of Venus occurred on June 8, 2004 and was visible across India. And the next pair of transits will not occur until December 2117 and December 2125.

ASSAM CELEBRATES WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY - 2012

World Environment Day (WED) is observed on June 5 every year to promote awareness on the importance of preserving our biodiversity, the need to identify problems related to the environment and ways to take corrective action.


To mark the World Environment Day, leading cement brand Topcem announced free distribution of one lakh non-woven eco-friendly carry bags in Guwahati city. It has set up free distribution kiosks, today, at various market areas such as Fancy Bazaar, Ganeshguri, Beltola with the objective of creating awareness on the use of eco-friendly carry bags.
 The bags are also  distributed through the dealer network of the company across the State.
