We have some great stuff coming – Apple CEO

iol scitech feb 28 Apple~1

File photo: Apple CEO Tim Cook speaks during an event to announce new products in San Jose.

Cupertino, California – Apple CEO Tim Cook sought to reassure shareholders worried about the company’s sagging stock price that the iPhone and iPad maker is on the verge of inventing more breakthrough products that will prove it hasn’t lost its creative edge.

“The company is working as hard as ever, and we have some great stuff coming,” Cook told shareholders on Wednesday before taking their questions during Apple’s annual meeting at its Cupertino, California, headquarters.

True to Apple’s secretive nature, Cook didn’t provide any further product details, although at one point he said the company is considering entering other categories besides its popular line of digital music players, smartphones and tablet computers.

There has been speculation that Apple is working on an Internet-connected watch or TV that will be introduced later this year. One shareholder at Wednesday’s meeting threw a new idea for Apple to ponder – a computerised bicycle. Cook, an avid bicyclist, chuckled at the suggestion, along with the rest of the audience.

Although there were more moments of levity, Wednesday’s meeting was less celebratory than the events in past years, when Apple’s stock price was soaring to the delight and enrichment of its shareholders.

Since hitting an all-time high of $ 705.07 (about R6 300) five months ago, Apple’s stock has plunged by 37 percent. The decline has wiped out collective shareholder wealth totalling $ 240 billion. That amount exceeds the total market value of Microsoft, which reigned as the most influential company in personal computing until Apple ushered in an era of mobile devices with the 2007 release of the iPhone and the 2010 introduction of the iPad.

Cook, who became CEO shortly before Apple co-founder Steve Jobs died in October 2011, has a huge incentive to get the company’s stock price strong again. The 1.1 million Apple shares he owns are worth about $ 300 million less than they were five months ago.

“I don’t like it, either,” Cook said of the downturn in Apple’s stock.

Apple Inc. hasn’t unveiled another trailblazing product since Cook took over, raising concerns about whether the company is losing the ingenuity that has set it apart from the rest of the technology pack.

Cook told shareholders the company’s commitment to innovation remains Apple’s “North Star” and “the beat of its heart.”

His pep talk evidently didn’t inspire many investors. Apple’s stock shed another $ 4.40 to close Wednesday at $ 444.57.

Shareholders still affirmed their confidence in Cook at the meeting. Preliminary results showed Cook was re-elected to Apple’s eight-member board of directors with 99 percent of the vote.

Wall Street may have been disappointed that Cook didn’t provide any further clarity on whether Apple might distribute some of its $ 137 billion in cash to shareholders in the form of a dividend increase or a special one-time payment.

Apple shareholder David Einhorn, who runs the Greenlight Capital hedge fund, turned Apple’s cash hoard into a hot topic in the weeks leading up the meeting. He sued to block a proposal that would have required shareholder approval for Apple to issue preferred stock. Einhorn argued that if approved, it would create a bureaucratic hurdle that could make it more cumbersome to return cash to shareholders. He wants Apple to issue preferred shares called “iPrefs” that would yield an annual dividend of four percent.

A potential showdown was averted last week when a federal judge ruled that Apple had improperly bundled several corporate governance issues, including the handling of preferred stock, in the same proposal. Apple withdrew the proposal from Wednesday’s agenda, to the chagrin of two shareholders who said they would have voted for it. Supporters of the measure included the California Public Employee Retirement System, or CalPERS, which urged Cook to do what’s best for Apple’s long-term interests.

“I would say the message is, ‘Keep calm and carry on,’“ said Anne Simpson, who oversees corporate governance for CalPERS.

Einhorn, whose fund owns 1.3 million Apple shares, didn’t appear at Wednesday’s meeting.

In response to a question Wednesday, Cook said Einhorn’s resistance to a shareholder vote on preferred stock remains “a silly sideshow, regardless of how a judge ruled on it.” Cook remarks echoed the derisive description he used during an appearance at an investor conference earlier this month.

Cook also sounded a familiar refrain when he discussed Apple’s pile of cash. “This is a serious subject, and one we deliberate on as a board and a management team. We are in very, very active discussions on it,” Cook said.

Not long after Cook made similar remarks at last year’s annual meeting, Apple announced plans to start paying a quarterly dividend of $ 2.65 per share and to spend $ 10 billion buying back its stock in the fiscal year that began last October. Even though the dividend commitment costs Apple $ 10 billion annually, the company now has $ 39 billion more cash than it did year ago.

The prosperity underscores the ongoing popularity of Apple’s products.

Although Apple is selling more gadgets than ever before, the company’s profits and sales aren’t growing as robustly because of fiercer competition from a multitude of other smartphones and tablet computers, including ones costing less. Apple’s biggest headaches have been caused by Android, a mobile operating system that Internet search leader Google gives away to a long list of device makers led by Samsung Electronics.

There are now an estimated 600 million devices running on Android, giving it a lead over Apple.

Cook said Apple remains more interested in the quality of its products than the quantity sold.

“We want to make the best,” Cook said. “That’s why we are here.” – Sapa-AP

London – They’re minuscule, there’re millions of them, and one museum manager says they’re massively under-represented.

Jack Ashby, who manages London’s Grant Museum of Zoology, says he’s trying to give dragonfly nymphs, tortoise mites, and sea spiders the attention they deserve, unveiling a “Micrarium” devoted to some of animal kingdom’s smallest subjects.

Ashby says the Micracrium – housed in a former storage room within the larger museum – displays 2,323 slides of mini-monsters, from tortoise beetles to baby cuttlefish.

He says many of the slides were once used as study aids for British zoology and anatomy students and that some of them date back to the mid-19th century.

Ashby says that the Micrarium is free of charge. But don’t all come at once. The room is very small. – Sapa-AP

BJP points finger of accusation at Cong

Source:

Imphal, February 27 2013: Coming down heavily on the State Government with regard to the alleged involvement of Congress MLA TN Haokip’s son in the recent drug haul worth around Rs 25 crore, State BJP President Th Chaoba has said that the issue of drug trafficking in the State will be raised in Parliament and National Council.

The former Union Minister was speaking at a sit-in-protest staged by BJP Mahila Morcha against drug trafficking at the gate of the party office at Nityaipat Chuthek today.

Expressing concern over the involvement of the kins of high profile persons and VVIPS in drug trading, Th Chaoba alleged that the Congressmen might have diverted large chunk of Central Government fund in drug bussiness during the past 10 years of its rule in the State.

He also observed that the next State Assemby session must be boycotted if the issue is not discussed during the session.

Th Chaoba said that BJP would however raise the issue of drug trafficking in Manipur in Parliament and at the National Council.

Mentioning the evil effects of drug abuse and trafficking, Th Chaoba expressed worry about the fate of common people if politicians win election with the money earned from drug trafficking.

Urging the general public to remain alert to the misdeeds of so-called public leaders, Th Choaba opined that the whole issue of drug trade in the State must be handed over to CBI for investigation.

Although, Manipur has the reputation of producing good sports persons in the country, the rise of drug trafficking would hamper the development of sports in the State, he opined.

Saying that it is a known fact that drug kills more people than the guns do, Th Chaoba also appealed the people of Manipur to take a serious stand against drug mafias.

Meanwhile, BJP Mahila Morcha today submitted a memorandum to Governor Gurbachan Jagat demanding that recent cases of drug hauls be handed over to the Narcotics Bureau, Government of India.

The Mahila Morcha also demanded the institution of an indpendent body to investigate the recent drug haul at Pallel.

The memorandum also included demands like setting up of SIU or an investigating unit above NAB, proper checking at Tulihal airport and awarding befitting punishment to all the arrested drug traffickers.

SmartWatch all the rage at mobile fair

iol scitech feb 28 sony smartwatch

A hostess shows a Smartwatch by Sony at the Mobile World Congress, the world’s biggest mobile fair, in Barcelona.

Barcelona – After the smartphone, the intelligent watch promises to become the latest hi-tech trend, allowing wearers to peek at messages and even take calls without touching their phones.

As speculation grows that Apple may be working on an iWatch, other players at the world’s biggest mobile fair in Barcelona, including Japanese giant Sony, are already fighting for a place on customers’ wrists.

Their target market is the person who’s always glued to their smartphone, even in meetings or at the movies, or people who wish to monitor their heartbeat during exercise.

“The future in general is wearable devices,” said Massimiliano Bertolini, chief executive of Italian firm i’m, as he showed off his flagship product, i’m Watch, at the industry event.

Available since 2011 and present in several European countries including Britain and Poland, it will go on sale in Spain’s Corte Ingles department stores from next week, and could roll out with French retailers as soon as April, he said.

The smartwatch is an accessory to the smartphone, with which it communicates by Bluetooth wireless technology.

It means you can leave your phone in your pocket as you answer or reject a call, peruse emails or read updates from friends on Twitter or Facebook.

The i’m Watch features its own applications, too, such as i’m Sport, unveiled on Monday, which links with a heart rate detector to allow a jogger to check his pulse. Such functions already exist in specialised sports watches but not on watches that are linked to smartphones, Bertolini said.

With a square aluminium frame, a 1.5-inch (3.8-centimetre) touch screen and a strap available in various colours, the watch has already found 30,000 buyers, 80 percent of them men aged mostly between 25 and 50.

“Seventy percent are iPhone users, 25 percent Samsung and the rest are other telephones using Google’s Android operating system,” he said.

The company aims to sell more than 200,000 watches in 2013, notably by targeting women with publicity emphasising its design rather than its technology.

Italian-made, it sells for a minimum of 300 euros (about R3 000) for the basic model and prices climb to up to 16,000 euros for a luxury version in silver or encrusted with diamonds.

That leaves plenty of room in the market for competitors such as Sony’s SmartWatch, a square, Android-compatible rival for your wrist that sells for about 130 euros or the $ 150 Pebble, a rectangular, Android- and iOS-compatible offering by the company of the same name, which raised $ 10 million in three weeks on “crowdfunding” site Kickstarter to develop the product. – AFP

Drug Smuggling Via Air Womenfolk take protest to airport

Source:

Imphal, February 27 2013: Deman-ding immediate punitive action against officials of Airport Authority of India involved in smuggling of drugs, a large number of Meira Paibis stormed Tulihal Airport this evening.

Leaders and members of 14 different women’s organisations stormed the Airport Complex and raised slogans demanding action against officials of AAI involved in drug smuggling racket.

Slogans like “Drugs smuggling should be stopped immediately,” “Appropriate action should be taken against staff involved in the smuggling,” etc were raised by the womenfolks.

The demonstrators were pacified by lady personnel of the CISF and the Police.

Later, the women’s bodies representatives submitted a memorandum to the General Manager of the AAI.

It may be mentioned that on January 11 personnel of now disbanded SIU had seized drugs worth Rs 1.4 crore from the Airport.

Following the seizure, the SIU was disbanded.

However, the State Cabinet had decided to hand over the case to CBI.

On Sunday, drugs worth lakhs of rupees were seized again from a person at the Airport besides making a haul of drugs worth crores of rupees in Chandel district that involved an airline official.

Experts marvel at world’s deepest sea vents

iol scitech feb 28 sea vents

www.youtube.com

The researchers discovered the deepest known hydrothermal vent field and new organisms in the Caribbean trench nearly three years ago.

Kingston – Researchers steering a remote-controlled submarine around the world’s deepest known hydrothermal vents have collected numerous samples from sunless depths of the Caribbean Sea where blazing hot, mineral-rich fluid gushes from volcanic chimneys that look like gnarled tree stumps.

Jon Copley, chief scientist for the expedition of Britain’s National Oceanography Centre, said on Wednesday he believes that laboratory analysis in the coming months will reveal some new life forms that have evolved in the pitch-black vent areas of the Cayman Trough, more than 3 miles (5 kilometres) below the sea’s surface between the Cayman Islands and Jamaica.

“From body form alone, I am confident that we have found several new species on this expedition: probably a new species of sea anemone, a few species of bristle worms, and some small crustaceans,” Copley said in an email from the RRS James Cook research ship.

The researchers discovered the deepest known hydrothermal vent field and new organisms in the Caribbean trench nearly three years ago. At a depth of 4,960 meters (16,273 feet), the Beebe Vent Field spews out inky, copper-enriched fluids from hot regions below the sea floor into the frigid depths of the sea.

The undersea vents are among the hottest found anywhere on the planet. The highest sustained temperature that researchers measured was just over 400 Celsius (752 Fahrenheit), said Copley, a marine biologist who works at Britain’s University of Southampton.

Besides discovering new life, scientists say the study of the vents could yield a variety of new insights into the geological processes that form and drive them, the physics of so-called “supercritical fluids” – liquids so hot they act like gasses – and the chemical makeup of the ocean’s depths.

Copley said studies of the marine life found in the area should also tell scientists more about how animals disperse and evolve in the dark ocean depths, which cover most of our planet.

Another scientist aboard the ship, Andrew David Thaler, a post-doctoral researcher at the Duke University marine laboratory in Beaufort, North Carolina, said there were abundant populations of some species around the vents, particularly an eyeless shrimp dubbed Rimicaris hybisae that was discovered by the research team in 2010.

“They’re so thick that you often can’t even see the rock beneath because they’re buried in blankets of shrimp,” Thaler said in an email from the James Cook.

Such large amounts of anemones were found at the Beebe site that Thayer said they “look almost like meadows.”

Among other things, researchers recorded images of a slender mineral chimney almost 10 meters (33 feet) tall. At another site, a mound of minerals formed by the superheated fluid rushing from the vents rises some 30-meters (98 feet) from the seafloor. They saw brilliant oranges and red colours on the seabed from the bounty of iron, and also blues and greens from copper.

The ultra-hot fluid shooting from the vents into the icy cold of the deep ocean creates a smoke-like effect and leaves behind pinnacle-shaped structures of metal ore. The pressure – 500 times stronger than the earth’s atmosphere – keeps the water from boiling.

At the base of this ecosystem are chemical-eating bacteria that draw on the hydrogen sulphide and methane erupting from the vents to make food.

Unlike other living things, the organisms that inhabit the dark vent areas do not depend on photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert sunlight into energy. Instead, chemosynthetic bacteria is the base of the food chain.

To see what scavengers might show up, a big slab of pork was dropped into depths some distance away from the vents. Cusk eels about 1.5 meters long and scavenging crustaceans called amphipods made short work of the meat offering, according to the expedition scientists.

“The fact that it has been so quickly eaten means that, despite being very nutrient-limited, the deep sea can still support animals capable of exploiting the random occurrence of large carcasses sinking to the sea floor,” Thayer said. – Sapa-AP

No mercy as juvenile rhinos slain

INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPERS

File Photo: Government statistics released early last week suggest that at least 102 rhinos have been killed, mostly in the Kruger National Park. Photo: Matthew Savides

Durban – For two years wildlife managers have been chopping the horns off all the adult rhinos at a private game reserve in KwaZulu-Natal in a desperate attempt to protect them from poachers.

But there were two young rhinos whose tiny horn stumps were considered too small to be of much value. So rangers decided to leave them alone for now.

But poachers had other ideas, and early this week both rhinos were destroyed swiftly and silently by sophisticated killers armed with dart guns and drugs instead of rifles and noisy bullets.

Clarke Smith, the spokesman for the Nambiti private game reserve near Ladysmith, confirmed on Tuesday that the carcasses of both sub-adult rhinos were found early on Monday with the emerging horns cut off.

However, two older rhinos in the same group – but which had been dehorned recently by reserve managers – were not harmed.

“These guys are clearly very sophisticated because they seemed to know exactly which two animals to target and where to find them in a reserve where the adults rhinos have been dehorned already,” said Smith.

“We also found a dart at the scene which suggests that they were killed with an overdose of M99 (a veterinary drug used to immobilise wildlife).”

Smith said the poachers had also taken advantage of the full moon to hunt at night and did not appear to have chopped the reserve fence or left obvious tracks on the ground.

“This has been a dreadful experience. On one hand we seem to be doing the right thing because none of the dehorned rhinos were targeted. So we still think that dehorning is the right way to go. Yet we may have to rethink our strategy.

“We have to ask ourselves at what stage you need to remove a horn. We felt these two animals were still too young. Have we come to the point where we now have to chop off the horns while they are still babies?”

The latest killings at Nambiti have raised the national death toll for rhinos to well over 100 in less than two months. Government statistics released early last week suggest that at least 102 rhinos have been killed, mostly in the Kruger National Park.

The latest deaths at Nambiti mean that at least 14 rhinos have been killed in KZN this year, including a white rhino found poached and dehorned at Ndumo game reserve on Tuesday last week. – The Mercury

Arrest of MLA’s son with drugs Let the law take its course TN Haokip

Source:

Imphal, February 27 2013: Former Minister and Congress MLA TN Haokip today assured that he would not stand in the way of any legal proceedings initiated against his son who was arrested along with contraband drugs yesterday and asserted that the law should take its own course.

Addressing a press meet today at his official quarters at Babupara in connection with the seizure of drugs from his son, TN Haokip clarified that he had severed ties with his son, Seikholen Haokip, on family matter since some time back.

Though the MLA refused to totally disown his son, he clarified that he has no connection whatsoever with the seizure of drugs from his son.

He said the house at Deulalane where the seizure was made has been registered in the name of Seikholen and reiterated that he would not resist any legal proceedings initiated against his son.

TN Haokip further said that the police personnel who were involved in the seizure of the drugs deserve due recognition and honour.

At the same time, the MLA also urged for unbiased trial for all those involved in drug smuggling racket.

He said that the identities of the owners of the drugs, the investors and transporters should be established fairly in the interest of fighting against the menace.

It may be mentioned that a team of Thoubal district police commandos seized a huge consignment of contraband drugs worth about Rs 25 crore on Sunday from vehicles that were occupied by six persons including PRO of PIB (DW) Col Ajay Chow-dhry, an airline official Ng Brojen and four others.

Following this, the drugs were seized from the residence of Seikholen Haokip.

Seikholen Haokip who was produced before the Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate yesterday has been remanded to police custody till March 8 .

Mars or Bust: A Private Mission by 2018?

In 2001 the millionaire Dennis Tito became the first paying space tourist — he bought a flight to the International Space Station from the Russian space agency.

Now he’s aiming higher. He and a group of fellow space entrepreneurs announced today that they will try to mount the first-ever flight to Mars, sending a man and a woman to fly past the red planet and return safely in 501 days.

And they say they hope to pull it off by 2018 — just five years from now, and decades earlier than NASA or anyone else has even contemplated.

Tito, now 72, says he does not plan to fly himself, but he does plan to bankroll part of the mission himself. A former NASA engineer who went into finance to make his fortune, he says the flight would be possible because it would use privately designed spacecraft already in development — perhaps a rocket and conical space capsule built by Elon Musk’s SpaceX company, with an inflatable module made by Robert Bigelow’s firm for extra room.

“It’s not a commercial mission, it’s a philanthropic mission,” said Tito in an interview with ABC News.

Video: Mars or Bust by 2018

It would be a tough, dangerous, lonely trip, which is why Tito’s group, Inspiration Mars, suggests the crew be a married couple. They would not even land on Mars — too complicated to organize for now — just speed by, perhaps getting a look at it from an altitude of 100 miles.

But Inspiration Mars says the excitement of that first foray to another planet would change the world.

“It’s a great step for humanity,” said Tito. “I think it would be really exciting, not only to our generation, but younger generations as well.”

Pictures: Images From the Final Frontier

Is it possible, or crazy? Doctors have worried about radiation in deep space; psychologists have fretted about the stress on astronauts alone for more than a year in a cramped ship. And Tito concedes the technical challenges are daunting: “We’d better start burning the midnight oil” to make the flight happen in time.

It so happens that in 2018, Earth and Mars would align in such a way that a round-trip could be made with relatively little fuel. Another chance like this would not happen until 2031. Insipration Mars says in a paper that the ship would leave on Jan. 5, 2018, pass Mars on Aug. 20, and be home on May 21, 2019.

That is, if everything works. Can it? Would you and your spouse want to be alone in deep space for a year?

“This ‘Mission for America’ will generate new knowledge, experience and momentum for the next great era of space exploration,” wrote the organizers. “It is intended to encourage all Americans to believe again in doing the hard things that make our nation great.”

Pallel drug haul Govt studies NCB option

Source:

Imphal, February 27 2013: The State Government is considering the option of handing over the Pallel drug haul case to the Narcotics Control Bureau or any other Central Government investigation agency, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam has said.

Addressing the media at his Babupara official residence today, the Deputy Chief Minister, who also holds the Home portfolio, said that the matter would be discussed in the State Cabinet soon so that the case may be handed over to a Central investigation agency.

Regarding seizure of large quantity drugs from Imphal airport by SIU, Gaikhangam said that the process of handing over the case to CBI is currently underway.

The State Government has also directed the CISF personnel on duty at Imphal airport to remain alert to thwart drug smuggling through air route.

Noting arrest of MLA TN Haokip’s son by the police along with a huge consignment of psychotropic drugs, Gaikhangam said, ‘be it politicians or police officers, there is no question of Government leniency against the guilty ones’ .

Lauding the police team which seized a large quantity of drugs apart from arrest of the drug traffickers, Gaikhangam said that the Home Department is considering to award them as encouragement.

He also urged the State police personnel to be sincere and active in discharging their duty in future as well.

Saying that there is need to block the State from being used as a ‘drug corridor’ by drug traffickers, Gaikhangam mentioned about the need of the co-operation and alertness of the general public in this regard.

Government machinaries alone would not be able to check the menace, he said.

On a query whether a relative of a senior police officer was part of the Pallel drug cartel, Gaikhangam said that nothing could be disclosed at this point of time as investigation is going on.

He however said that everybody is equal before law and added justice would prevail.

As the main accused are in police custody, everything would come to light that would automatically lead to catching the ‘big fish’ soon, Gaikhangam said.

Responding to another query on why manipulation of number plates of vehicle registration number was not mentioned in the three FIRs filed against the arrested persons of Pallel drug haul, Gaikhangam said that he would look into the matter.

Defending the police, the Deputy Chief Minister said that the investigating police officers have taken the matter lightly.

BCIM car rally flagged off, enters Myanmar CM hopes rally puts State on development map

Source:

Imphal, February 27 2013: Inspite of the Kuki State Demand Committee enforcing ‘public blockade’ in Kuki dominated areas, the BCIM (Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar) Car Rally, aimed at reviving the ancient trade route, has crossed into Myanmar without any incident.

Manipur-leg of the rally was flagged-off this morning from the historic Kangla by Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, who expressed confidence that the Confederation of Indian Industryinitiated car rally will not only revive historical ties and links among the people of South East Asian countries but will provide new impetus in the implementation of the look East Policy.

Announcing that the Ministry of External Affairs has decided to provide ‘Visa on Arrival’ facility at Moreh for Myanmarese citizens in order to visit India, especially Manipur to get health care facilities, he expressed hope the Ministry would also ease travel restrictions between India and its neighbouring countries like Bangladesh and China to promote healthier people-to-people contact.

Recognising the need and importance of inter-dependency among the people in their efforts to realise the dreams of development, it is imperative to open all available channels of transport and communication, opined the Chief Minister and suggested that ensuring harmonious movement of goods and services and people across the borders would provide the much needed boost in improving relations between the neighbouring countries.

Speaking on the State’s context, he referred to the london Olympics bronze medallist MC Mary Kom as a shining example of manipur awaiting proper exposure and assistance to compete with the best in the field of games and sports.

Pointing out to the rallyists comprising Indians as well as many foreign participants, that Manipur is the place of which gave Polo to the world, Ibobi also conveyed that along with plentiful natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, Manipur possesses huge potential for development of tourism industry.

He also expressed confidence that the State in the near future would be in a position to export Manipuri silk to the neighbouring countries.

Apart from Ministers, MLAs and high ranking security and civil officials, CII Eastern Region chairman RK Agarwal and Tata motors Managing Director Karl Slym were also present at the flag-off ceremony.

The rallyists arrived here late last night from Jiribam.

The rally of 25 SUVs, comprising 13 Bangladeshis, 20 from China, 25 Indians and 17 Myanmarese nationals, is scheduled to wind up in Kunming, china on march 5.As the rallyists drove out of Kangla, school children waved flags of the four participating nations to wish them safe journey.

In view of KSDC agitation, adequate security arrangement was made along the rally route.

At Moreh, where the rallyists arrived at around 3 pm, members of the Bangladesh team described the Jiribam-Imphal stretch as the worst section in the entire route till date.

During a brief interaction with mediapersons prior to having lunch at the last town on the indian side, one of the rallyists commented that riding on horse-back would be more convenient mode of travel from Jiribam to Imphal.

Even as district administration clamped CrPC 144 as a preventive measure in view of the KSDC agitaton at the border town which has substantial Kuki populace, the agitating KSDC also imposed its own version of ‘public curfew’ and put up black flags at different locations of the town to air their grievances against the government of Manipur.

However, the rally crossed Moreh towards Myanmar without any incident.

Large number of Myanmarese nationals also gathered at Moreh to cheer the rally participants.

After a traditional lunch hosted by the Commerce and Industries Department, Commerce and industries Minister Govindas Konthoujam flagged off the last leg of the indian-section at Moreh.

The flag-off ceremony was also attended by Tengnoupal AC MLA DK Korungthang, DC (chandel) and top officials of Commerce and Industries Department.

The rally, was flagged off from Kolkata on February 22 and after completing the Bangladesh leg re-entered India at Jiribam via Silchar yesterday morning.

It is said that more than six decades after an ancient trade route was closed post World War II, the BCIM hopes to retrace the lost trails and revive commercial trade in the ‘Southern Silk Route’ with the 3,000-km car rally from Kolkata to Kunming in China.

It is said that the rally would not only achieve the unique feat of reviving the ancient route but would also demonstrate symbolically that China is not far away from India.

The route through which the Rally cars will travel are also in the most underdeveloped areas of the four nations, thus having enormous potential to improve trade activities in case basic facilities are put in place by the respective countries.

The idea to hold a rally between Kunming and Kolkata took shape with a resolution at the 2006 Delhi (BCIM) Forum meeting and the suggestion was soon affirmed between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Chinese President Hu Jintao later in the same year with a joint communique.

CII then initiated dialogue with its counterpart organisations and governments in Bangladesh and Myanmar for this car rally.

80 participants from the four countries will participate in 20 SUVs in the BCIM Car Rally.

New science centre seals future hopes

Cape Town – A time capsule containing the hopes of leading scientists was sealed at the official opening of the Cape Town Science Centre on Tuesday by Science and Technology Minister Derek Hanekom.

The centre, which was previously called the MTN Science Centre, moved from its previous location at Century City to Observatory last year, and has been running from its new premises for nearly a year.

Centre director Julie Cleverdon said the centre had been running for a year, but had not been officially launched until on Tuesday.

Hanekom sealed a time flask containing the hopes of 13 leading South African scientists on what they hope to discover in their fields by February 26, 2023.

Cleverdon said the flask, which would be on display at the centre, would only be opened in 10 years time to see how close the predictions made by the scientists matched the reality in 2023.

One of the scientists, Professor Anusuya Chinsamy-Turan, a UCT palaeo-biologist, said she imagined that in 2023 they would discover the actual bones of a large meat eater, which was known only by tracks and isolated teeth.

Cleverdon said that the idea behind the time flask was to move away from the tradition of “cutting a ribbon”.

“We decided to do this to get people to start thinking about where science will take us in 10 years time so they can start to engage with the possibilities presented to us by science and technology. So it will be interesting to see which of those predictions will come true,” Cleverdon said.

Since moving to its new premises, the centre has attracted about 70 000 visitors, of which 20 000 have been visiting school groups.

Hanekom said he believed that “by engaging South African citizens in science, they can clearly see the role and value of science in their everyday lives and that it is essential for the development of our country”.

“Science centres offer wonderful spaces to explore the world around us.

“They support learning in both formal and informal situations, leading to greater comprehension and appreciation of science.” Hanekom said that the department had “walked the road” with the centre since its funding was discontinued a few years ago. “This occasion could well be considered a celebration of the fruits of perseverance,” he said.

Hanekom said he was proud that his department had donated R5-million to the centre. He also thanked the Western Cape Education Department for helping out. He said centres like this one could introduce science to pupils who did not have laboratories or computer labs at their schools. – Cape Argus
