The legendary Assamese poet and Sahitya
Akademi Award winner Hiren Bhattacharyya passed away after prolonged
illness this morning at around 11:30 am in Guwahati.
Popularly known as ‘Hiru Da’, Bhattacharyya(80) has achieved numerous prizes and accolades for his poetry including Bishnu Rabha Award in 1998, Rajaji Puroskar(awarded by Bharatiya Bidya Bhawan) in 1984-1985, Soviet Desh Neheru Award in 1987 and Asom Upotyoka Sahitya Award(Assam Valley Literary Award) in 2000. His anthologies of poems include 'Roudro Kamona', 'Tumar Bahi', 'Sugondhi Pokhilaa', 'Moor Dekh', 'Bibhinno Dinor Kobita' and 'Shoichor Pothar Manuh'.
Born in Jorhat, Assam in the year 1932, Hiren Bhattacharyya, who has also edited several newspapers and magazines in his lifetime, was one of the most celebrated poets of Assam.
