Mountaineer Shanti Rai cycles 2,500 km for greener and cleaner India

NAMCHI, 17 Feb: Sikkimese mountaineer Shanti Rai is back from a challenging 35-day bicycle expedition covering 2,500 kms across the country. The expedition, Go Green Girls (GGG), was organized by the Women’s Adventure Network of India (WANI) between 05 January and 07 February, 2014.

The participants cycled through the west coast of India from Kutch to Kerala covering distance of approximately 2,500 kilometers. Fifteen women took part in the 35-day cycling expedition that was flagged off from Bharuch, Gujarat.

The team cycled 50-120 kilometers every day which amounts to about five to seven hours of cycling each day. The aim behind organizing the expedition is to promote a greener, cleaner and healthier India and encourage younger women to higher levels of achievement through presentations in schools and colleges.

Shanti was selected after a tough physical endurance test in Nagpur and is the first woman from Sikkim to participate in such an adventure event. 28-year-old Shanti has an MPhil in Botany and had never cycled before. She reached her home town, Namchi today.

WANI is a women’s organisation committed to empowering women through adventure. It is the brainchild of a few passionate women adventurers who decided to get together to create a powerful movement that will sweep across India. This initiative resulted in the birth of the Women Adventure Network of India (WANI). One of the missions of the organization is to bring women of all adventure sports on one platform.

WANI had organized a similar cycling expedition from Kolkata-Kanyakumari where 15 women cycled 3000 kms in 35 days from 26 Jan-28 Feb in 2011.

North Sound, Antigua and Barbuda – An explosive assault by Darren Sammy and Dwayne Bravo over the final 10 overs lifted the West Indies to a competitive 269 for six against England in the first one-day international at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on Friday.

Labouring at 153 for five in the 40th over as the tourists’ trio of slow bowlers exploited helpful conditions, Sammy changed the tenor of the match completely upon his arrival.

He smashed 61 off just 36 deliveries with five fours and four sixes as England captain Stuart Broad paid a heavy price for returning to his fast-medium bowlers in the final stages of an innings that was decidedly pedestrian though the first 35 overs.

Bravo played the captain’s role superbly with his unbeaten 87

(91 balls, 8 fours, 1 six), at times matching the rampaging former skipper shot-for-shot during at 116-run sixth-wicket partnership that lifted Caribbean spirits on and off the field.

By the time Sammy fell to the final ball of the innings, 85 runs had been plundered off the last five overs.

Tim Bresnan claimed that final wicket but he, together with Barbadian-born Chris Jordan, suffered the most at the hands of the rampaging pair, conceding 135 runs in a combined 19 overs.

This contrasted sharply with the returns of the off-spinners, Joe Root, James Tredwell and debutant Moeen Ali, who suffocated the West Indies top-order to the extent that they were struggling at 45 for four in the 16th over when Bravo joined Lendl Simmons.

Playing positively, but still carefully, the pair put on 108 for the fifth wicket before Simmons, who finally ended his run of low scores against England dating back some five years in getting to a workmanlike 65, perished to a catch at cover attempting a lofted drive off Bresnan.

His demise ushered in the former skipper Sammy, whose ultra-aggressive approach saw England wilting in the midday heat.

Murder of MPP VP Manisana Assassin in custody Dy CM informs House

Source:

Imphal, February 27 2014 : One URF cadre involved in the assassination of MPP vice-president Haobijam Manisana who contested the Assembly election thrice has been arrested, stated Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Gaikhangam on the floor of the House today.

He stated that the case related to firing attacks upon MLA Th Shyamkumar has been withdrawn following an understanding.

Raising a call attention motion, MLA Dr I Ibohalbi said that with the law and order situation becoming more volatile, politicians are increasingly targeted.

Responding to the call attention motion, the Deputy Chief Minister stated that MPP vice-president Haobijam Manisana was shot dead at Changangei Ucheckon area on October 13 last year.

One Y Mani alias Telheiba of Thoubal Khong Ahanbi involved in the assassination of Manisana was arrested by police on January 4 this year, and he is currently lodged in judicial custody.

Mani alias Telheiba was a cadre of KCP (Nongdrenkhomba group) before he joined URF.

File pic of the car inside which Manisan was shot dead on Oct 13 last year
File pic of the car inside which Manisan was shot dead on Oct 13 last year

From his disclosure, it has been learnt that he killed Manisana at the instruction of URF’s S/S commander Lemba alias Binodhor.

Informing that Lemba alias Binodhor is from Thanga Chingkha, Gaikhangam asked how long he can evade the law.

Claiming that security given to VVIPs, VIPs and common people in Manipur is greater as compared to other States, the Deputy Chief Minister stated security escorts are being given to sitting MLAs as well as ex-MLAs, candidates and officers who perceive threats.

Appealing to all Ministers and MLAs to inform the Home Minister if they are going on tour beyond greater Imphal area, Gaikhangam said that when due information is given, additional escorts are allotted apart from instructing security personnel deployed along the routes to be on alert.

On learning that H Manisana was threatened by a UG group, concerned SPs and police stations were informed and ‘area security’ was given in his every movement.

Even as Manisana provided details of his tour programmes, he did not give any information about his tour programmes on the fateful day.

With no information available and his movement unknown to the Home Department, security personnel could not be alerted.

Had due information been given, the tragedy could have been averted.

If the family of the deceased demands ex-gratia, the demand would be considered favourably, stated the Deputy Chief Minister.

With regard to the firing attack on MLA Th Shyamkumar in which the assailants ran inside an army camp, Gaikhangam said that two confusing propositions have emerged.

Saying that the MLA informed him about the attack soon after, Gaikhangam maintained that an FIR case was registered at Heingang police station immediately and launched due investigation.

The Home Minister’s suggestion to come back after noting down vehicle registration number of the assailants and take up the matter through the State DGP and the army’s counterpart instead of waiting for the assailants at the gate of army’s Leimakhong camp was turned down by the MLA.

It took some time to establish whether the attack was undertaken by army men or surrenderees or anti-social elements.

Later, IFC Minister Ngamthang Haokip and MTDC Chairman Manga Vaiphei confessed that the mischievous attack was undertaken by some of their men, and they also conveyed their readiness to apologise for the same.

The assailants who ran into the army camp after firing at the MLA are Soson Vaiphei and Lalboi Vaiphei.

They belong to Leimakhong Mission Veng.

Soson Vaiphei is a son of the village chief and Lalboi Vaiphei is a personnel of 2nd MR.They were returning after repairing their vehicle at an automobile workshop when they find themselves moving behind the MLA and his escorts.

As they signalled to overtake the MLA’s team, security escorts not only caned them but also fired at one of the wheels of their vehicle.

This punctured one of the tyres and they decided to drive into the army camp.

On their (Lalboi and Soson) request, the two sides came to an agreement and the MLA has agreed to withdraw case, Gaikhangam informed the House.

Earlier rising the call attention motion, Dr Ibohalbi said that all politicians are under threats.

He cited the assassination of H Manisana and attack upon Th Shyamkumar.

Informing that he was under severe threats, Manisana appealed to the Home Department to take up security measures and monitor his movements, stated Dr Ibohalbi.

Had the State Government taken necessary security measures in time, Manisana would be still alive.

Dr Ibohalbi went on to question as to why no security escorts were allotted even after knowing that some elements were going to make life attempts on Manisana.

Roger Federer uttered the astounding revelation after reaching the semi-finals of the Dubai Open that he could conceivably remain on tour for another decade. Photo by: Saleh Salem

Dubai – Roger Federer uttered the astounding revelation after reaching the semi-finals of the Dubai Open on Thursday that he could conceivably remain on tour for another decade.

The 32-year-old appeared to dismiss the idea when it was first put to him by the on-court interviewer, Chris Bradnam, but further questioning revealed that he did not rule out going on almost as long as Jimmy Connors.

The American was still performing at a high level on tour past the age of 40, back in the early 1990′s.

In Dubai, the Swiss legend was presented with a fan’s request that ‘win or lose, please would you keep playing another ten years?’

“No problem with that – the question is whether it would be on the tour or not!” answered Federer light-heartedly. Then he became a little more serious.

“Clearly the goal is to play as long as I can, and to enjoy myself,” he said, knocking back critics’ suggestions that he should quit when he no longer has a chance of winning another Grand Slam title, which may be quite soon.

“Playing is not a problem: the question is (whether it is) on the tour or not,” he repeated, and then offered one important insight as to why it is no problem.

“The family love it on tour,” Federer emphasised, referring to his wife Mirka, a former tour player, and to his two twin daughters, Myla Rose and Charlene Riva. It was a remark which prompted him to a slight rethink.

“So ten years, maybe,” he concluded, only half smilingly. “Ask it again and we will see. Let’s talk in ten years.”

Part of the enduring dynamic is that much of Federer’s popularity is unrelated to just winning the biggest titles.

It appears not to have waned at all, even though he slipped from top spot in the rankings 15 months ago to world number eight now.

He has won frequent accolades for sportsmanship and charitable works, and his public relations efforts are famously and modestly generous. He also enjoys promoting many of the ATP Tour tournaments, at whatever level.

But the biggest ingredient of his future is probably the welfare of his twin daughters, and on a separate occasion here this week Federer explained how well the lives of his two 4-year-olds appear to fit with his schedule on tour.

“They’re coming to matches from time to time,” he said. “You depend on the stadiums, and some are easier and some are harder to come to. It’s fun for them to come to the site sometimes, you know.

“They play a little bit of tennis themselves now. They can relate a little bit to what I am doing, and it’s not a bad thing.

“Yeah, it’s enjoyable and I like it when they come to the courts, and I’m warming up and they’re running around too.

“Then I come back after the matches, and they help me take my tape off and it’s really cute. It’s nice,” he said.

These emotional vibrations are what the longevity of Federer’s ATP Tour career – already 18 years, and perhaps capable of continuing till more records are broken – may hinge upon.

Connors did not officially retire until he was 44, thus playing on tour for 24 years, and reaching more Grand Slam quarter-finals (41) than any other male until Federer equalled it at this year’s Australian Open.

The American eventually played 1,532 tournament matches and won 110 titles, which will take some beating, although Federer has already played 1,150 matches, and has won 77 titles.

His 302 weeks as world number one compares favourably to Connors’ 268, and he has won many more Grand Slam titles (17) than Connors (8). – Sapa-AFP

Newlands: winner takes all

One of the most anticipated Tests plays out in Cape Town when South Africa tackle Australia in the series decider at Newlands. Picture: David Ritchie

Cape Town – South Africa captain Graeme Smith expects an even contest between bat and ball to set up a thrilling finale in the series-deciding third Test against Australia at Newlands in Cape Town on Saturday.

The wicket has been a key factor in the opening two Tests, a lively pitch helping Mitchell Johnson bowl Australia to a 281-run win in the series opener in Pretoria and a slower and more abrasive surface in Port Elizabeth aiding South Africa to get prodigious reverse-swing and claim a 231-run win.

“It looks like a really good Test wicket and will have something for both bat and ball,” Smith told reporters on Friday.

“It can get a bit flat and slow towards the back end if it is hot, but it has also changed of late and there has been a bit more in it than in the past.”

The Proteas captain said he expected a different type of wicket to the one that saw Australia bowled out for 47 in their second innings in 2011.

“I think the wicket has settled down quite a bit since then. That Test was also played in November just after winter.”

Smith denied that the South African team had asked Newlands curator Evan Flint for any specific type of wicket or that they had done so ahead of the second test.

“Port Elizabeth has been exactly the same for the last 40 years, I’m amazed that so much was made of the wicket after the Test. We knew exactly what to expect down there and we were the team that adapted best to the conditions.”

Smith has scored 37 runs in four innings in the series, but felt in good form and was looking forward to playing on a ground where he averages 52 over his career.

“I feel like I have been batting well the whole season, it is just these last two games. In Pretoria I felt I was unlucky there and I let myself down in Port Elizabeth.

“My training has gone well, mentally I feel in a good space. I have ticked all the boxes, it’s now about going out there tomorrow and getting in.”

Having former coach and fellow left-handed opener Gary Kirsten back with the squad this week in a consultancy role has been a boost, Smith said.

“It’s always nice to have Gary back, he always adds value with his calmness, experience and work rate. He is a great asset to us.”

Proteas coach Russell Domingo said that Australia opener David Warner’s suggestion that AB de Villiers had been tampering with the ball in the second test would add extra-motivation to the side. Smith himself was clearly seething.

“He is becoming a little bit of a rent-a-quote. My thoughts are strong and I will probably say something towards the end of the test match. It’s sad that it took the gloss off a great test win and a great performance.”

Five potential match deciders:

Runs from the captains

Graeme Smith and Michael Clarke have yet to make an impression with the bat in this series. For two players who have a combined 53 Test centuries to their names, the lack of runs is staggering. Of course it isn’t easy for either man; their respective teams bank on the old adage of “cutting off the snake’s head” and with such awesome fast-bowling armoury at their disposal the two captains are always going to be targets. Smith might get a pass given he’s opening the batting in the hardest country in the world in which to bat. Clarke’s looking at other middle order batsmen in this series, and seeing that they’ve scored four centuries between them – he’s under more pressure to make his starts count.

Johnson v Steyn

Yes ‘Mitch’ has four more wickets than ‘Dale-o’ but in terms of impact on the series it’s 1-1. With conditions in his favour Johnson scared the bejesus out of South Africa at Centurion, while in PE, Steyn utilised the conditions better, getting the ball to reverse swing to blast out Australia’s middle order in the second innings. Newlands is Steyn’s happiest hunting ground, 57 of his wickets have come there in 11 Tests at an average of 21.14. Johnson’s |impact in two Tests there was minimal. But what’s taken place in the past will have no bearing on what’s to come at Newlands over the next five days..

Shane Watson

He simply has to play in Cape Town and if he does then he must bowl, says Australia’s coach Darren Lehmann. The problem for the Australians is that two of the star players from their first Test win were badly exposed in the second Test. Alex Doolan wafted about in PE, while Shaun Marsh lasted just three balls. The temptation would be to keep Marsh in, facing just three balls in PE is just too little evidence to say he’s suddenly lost form after making a century at Centurion. Doolan is new, and more easily able to be sacrificed. Watson can play at three, and offers a crafty option with the ball.

SA’s Catching

David Warner is averaging 65.75 in the series, having scored two half-centuries and a century – he’s also been dropped five times! At last count 10 catches have been put down by South Africa in this series. That is simply not a stat normally associated with South Africa, a team that at various stages of the sport’s history have redefined the way people view fielding. They were able to overcome all those errors – including some poor use of the DRS in PE, with Smith chirping afterwards: “We took something like 28 wickets in this Test.”

Newlands

Like Ellis Park for the rugby team, Newlands is a fortress … at least when the opponents aren’t Australia. For, since the end of isolation, Australia actually have a better record than SA at Newlands – with three wins from five Tests. South Africa’s two wins, though, have come in the last two Tests there between the teams in 2009 and famously in 2011. Steyn and Vernon Philander tend to bowl well there too, while Smith averages 52.12 in 16 Tests at his home ground. – Reuters and The Star
