Ebola virus drug ZMapp tested by U.S., Liberia for first time

The experimental Ebola virus drug ZMapp is now being tested by the U.S. and Liberian governments for the first time.

Adults and children of all ages will take part in the first formal study of the drug, which was developed by San Diego-based Mapp Pharmaceuticals Inc.

“We don’t expect that they’ll be a significant contribution (of patients) from the United States,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told The Associated Press Friday.

Officials anticipate needing to enroll 200 patients and wrap up the study by December 2016, although that may change if the epidemic continues to wane, AP reported.

“There is certainly a possibility that we may not get enough patients to finish” the study, Dr. Fauci said, AP reported.
