BJP leader asks Devendra Fadnavis to save Mumbai’s Cafe Samovar

BJP leader Shaina NC today met Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and appealed to him to save Cafe Samovar “which is an integral part of Mumbai’s cultural destination”. “Not just a tourist spot, Cafe Samovar has been second home to world famous artists and Indian cultural ambassadors such as Tayeb Mehta, M F Hussain, Raza, Akbar Padamsee and Gaitonde among many others.

“It has been a favourite hangout of yesteryear Hindi movie industry stars as well,” she said. “The world over, museums and art galleries have a cafe. Cafe Samovar is a non-profit venture and a favourite spot for artists, journalists and tourists alike,” she said.

Shaina NC, along with Devieka Bhojwani and Malavika Sangghvi, daughters of Usha Khanna, the owner of Cafe Samovar and others made a proposal to the chief minister requesting that the cafe should continue to exist as an alternate venue within the premises of the gallery or the museum.

The iconic Cafe Samovar, which will down the shutters tomorrow, plans to hold various cultural activities over the next ten days, in an extended farewell to its fans. The 50-year-old eatery at Kala Ghoda lost out on its space in Jehangir Art Gallery after a court order.
