New Delhi: The Narendra Modi government will present the contentious Land Acquisition Amendment Bill in Lok Sabha on Wednesday which it wants to get passed in the Budget session before April 5. The government is facing stiff resistance from opposition parties which have termed the Bill ‘anti-farmer’ and ‘anti-poor’.

If the government fails to get the Bill passed in the current session, then it would lapse and cannot be introduced again.

The Prime Minister on Tuesday tried to reach out to the opposition parties saying that he was willing to consider necessary changes to the Bill as his government was pro-poor.

Even though the government will comfortably pass the Bill in Lok Sabha, it won’t be a smooth sailing in Rajya Sabha as it does not enjoy majority and opposition parties have upped their ante to stall the Bill.

Modi said, “If there is anything anti-farmer in Land Bill, ready to correct them. The existing act does not have sufficient provisions for Land Acquisition. We need to acquire land for public welfare schemes. We need to address the shortcomings in the Act.”

Apart from opposition parties, activist Anna Hazare has also accused the government of misleading people.
