House dismantled

Source:

Imphal, April 09 2013: Other than the houses of the three accused and a house of a neighbour being torched, an incensed mob dismantled another house at Nagaram today.

Though the owner of the house has not been implicated by the police in the case of Satyabhama, the mob dismantled the house on the ground that accused Toijam Thesus alias Boy alias James took shelter there before his arrest.

The owner of the house has been identified as Phung-shok Wung alias Ashok (30) son of (L) Stephen of Sinakeithel, Ukhrul district.

Phungshok Wang’s mother and James’ mother are sisters, it is reported.

Effort to save African birds

iol scitech april 8 Southern Ground-Hornbil

Cape Town – These birds are described as “big, black and booming”, but unfortunately their population is anything but blooming.

So, conservationists have initiated a programme to rescue abandoned chicks and hand-rear them in an attempt to boost the population – and the recent donation of a vehicle has helped their efforts enormously, they say. These large, striking-looking birds are the charismatic Southern Ground-Hornbills, culturally important to rural inhabitants of Africa as the “thunder” or “rain” birds and described by conservationists as one of the flagship savannah (bushveld) species.

Sadly, it’s estimated that there are only about 1 500 Southern Ground-Hornbills left in South Africa, of which half are found within the greater Kruger National Park area.

They are classified internationally as “vulnerable” throughout their range in Africa, but within this country they have been listed as “endangered” because their numbers are still declining outside of formally protected areas like Kruger and may be “uplisted” to “critically endangered”.

Major reasons for their declining population are the loss of natural habitat to croplands, bush encroachment, over-grazing and the planting of plantations, the loss of suitable nesting trees, secondary poisoning and electrocution.

Their social structure and slow breeding habits don’t help. Unusually for birds this size – as large as turkeys – they live in social, co-operatively breeding groups that consist of anywhere between two and nine birds (the average size is 3.6), but with only one alpha male and one breeding female per group, with the rest helping.

On average, only one chick is raised to adulthood every nine years.

The Mabula Ground-Hornbill Project, whose partners include UCT’s Percy FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology and the Endangered Wildlife Trust, is working to slow this species’ decline, and their efforts include the harvesting and hand-rearing of “redundant” second-hatched chicks that, under natural conditions in the wild, die of starvation.

Project manager Lucy Kemp explains two eggs are laid at each breeding attempt but the parents can only care for one, abandoning the other.

“The second chick acts as a natural insurance policy to ensure that all the energy put into breeding amounts to something,” she says.

It is this second, redundant chick that is the basis of conservation efforts.

“We take them from wild nests to specialised hand-rearing facilities, and they are later reintroduced back into the wild,” says Kemp. “This reintroduction effort aims to restock areas where the birds have become locally extinct – 60 percent of their natural range – to halt the decline in their numbers, and slowly work towards rebuilding the population to sustainable levels.”

Recently, Imperial Truck Rental donated a vehicle to the project for use during its busiest time of year, which Kemp described as “a godsend”.

“We were able to get the chicks to the hand-rearers as quickly and safely as possible, giving them the very best chance of survival. Thus far, all but two of the 11 harvested chicks have survived and are growing well.” – Cape Argus

Days before she died, Satyabhama searched for a man

Source:

Imphal, April 08 2013: Ningombam Satyabhama who was a JRF of DBT Project, RIMS Pathology Department made a frantic search for a man’s residence all alone before her shocking death.

Sources informed that Satyabhama was seen searching for a man’s residence alone at about 8.30 in the evening.

On the last day of the Yaoshang festival (March 31) Satyabhama came riding a two-wheeler to a shop which deals in mobile recharge coupons near Nongmeibung, Imphal East district at about 8.30 pm.

She came to the shop and enquired about a man citing his name.

She was wearing a phanek on that particular night and she bought mobile recharge worth Rs 110 for Aircel from the shop.

As Satyabhama was waiting for delivery message for the e-recharge, she asked the shopkeeper, “Where exactly is the location of the man’s residence and how large is Nongmeibung?” .

The shopkeeper explained in detail the limits of Nongmeibung.

Taking the name of the particular man, Satyabhama said that the man was suffering from a stone case as if a doctor was coming to examine a patient.

Satyabhama put the same question to two other customers of the shop apart from the shopkeeper himself.

However, none of them could give a definite answer as they were unaware whether the particular man Satyabhama was looking for lived in Nongmeibung or not.

After a brief conversation, Satyabhama left the shop riding her two-wheeler to the South.

When she came to the shop she was not seen carrying anything except her mobile phone.

The shopkeeper and the few people who met Satyabhama at the shop realized that the woman found murdered at Bashikhong paddy fields was the one who had her mobile phone e-recharged at the shop on the last day of Yaoshang festival only when they came across reports of the murder in the newspapers.

RTI hearing on Merger Agreement on April 15

Source: Hueiyen News Service

Imphal, April 07 2013 : Along with admitting the application filed under Right to Information (RTI) for seeking information on the number of Manipuris employed as per the Merger Agreement Article VIII (3) dated 21/9/1949 through India’s President, Prime Minister and Home Minister since May, 2012, Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) has finally directed the applicant, Dr Th Suresh Singh, MD, WHO Fellow (Holland and UK) to attend a hearing of the same through video conference at NIC, Imphal West DC office on April 15, 2013 .

However, as the applicant would be leaving Imphal for the all important hearing of the case in Supreme Court on removal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act, he would be attending the same in person at New Delhi.

It may be noted here that Dr Suresh has been trying to get information under RTI with regard to the number of Manipuris employed as per Merger Agreement Article VIII (3) dated 21/9/1949 through President of India, Prime Minister and Union Home Minister since May 2012.The Prime Minister’s Office subsequently referred the matter to Union Home Ministry as they are the custodian of the said matter.

From May to August 2012, various sections of the Home Ministry had been referring the matter among themselves and thus not providing the required information.

Consequently, under relevant provisions of the RTI Act, the Ist appeal was made to the First Appellate Authority, the Joint Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, New Delhi on 10th August 2012.In spite of that the information being sought was not supplied within the stipulated 30 days period.

Hence, the 2nd and the last appealed was made to the Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) on 10th September 2012 and the later has fixed a hearing on 15/04/2013 at 12.15PM.In connection with the hearing of the case, Dr Suresh has informed that he would not only urge the CIC to direct the concerned authority to supply the information being sought but also to punish those concerned for not supplying of the information under the provision of RTI Act.

Satyabhama case, A hard nut to crack Mobile phone number through which Satyabhama was called out found registered under a fake name

Source: Hueiyen News Service

Imphal, April 07 2013 : Even as Manipur Police have been finding it hard to crack the case over killing of Ningombam Satyabhama, sources have hinted that the killing might have been designed by a fierce criminal with intent to kill right from the very beginning.

According to police reports, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Manipur Police has been formed yesterday with M Rajen, Additional SP of Imphal East as the head of the team.

Another four police officers are also in the team.

The case is being monitored personally by the DGP Y Joykumar along with other high police officials.

However, even after three days of recovery of the lifeless body of Satyabhama, the police have not been able to trace the culprits involved in the heinous crime.

The mobile phone used by Satyabhama has not been seized by the police till today.

However, on tracking the mobile phone number of Satyabhama, it has been revealed that the mobile phone number through which Satyabhama had been called out just before she left for office on that fateful day, had been activated just two days before the incident.

Women bandh supporters blocking road on the second day of the indefinite strike
Women bandh supporters blocking road on the second day of the indefinite strike

Apart from giving just one call to the mobile phone number of Satyabhama, the said mobile phone had not made any other call earlier to any other number whatsoever.

Sources disclosed that when the police tracked down the owner of the mobile number through which Satybhama had been called out from home, it was found that the number was registered under a fake name belonging to Bishnupur district, which does not exist at all.

As such, it is believed that the person had already planned to kill the victim well in advance and the police are having a hard time to trace the real culprits involved in the killing.

The family members of Satyabhama or her friends have also not been able to establish the identity of her lover, if she had any.

They are only able to inform the police that she had been having telephonic talks with one James, whom she revealed as a contractor and nothing more than that could be established by the police till date.

So, the Manipur police are having a hard time trying to solve the case, sources added.

Nonetheless, a police officer informed Hueiyen Lanpao that all the police officers of the different districts of the State are in full co-ordination to solve the case at the earliest possible.

Suspected areas would be raided at the order of the DGP.

The symbol that’s taken over the world

iol scitech april 5 hashtag

AFP

Hashtags have strayed way beyond the internet. They now appear on billboards, television show titles and product packaging.

London – A decade ago it was little more than a curiosity at the bottom right-hand corner of the telephone keypad, quietly fulfilling its primary function of providing a bit of company for the zero key. There was little consensus on what to call it; in the US it was the pound, while others called it the cross, hex, square, or number sign. These days, however, a whole new responsibility sits on the shoulders of these four intersecting lines.

Across Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, Google+, and soon (if rumours are to be believed) Facebook, the hashtag is supposed to help us cope with the information deluge by serving as a categorising symbol, a tagging device. Click on #kittens, and you should see kittens. Click on #m11, and you might discover information about the current state of a motorway running through Essex. But hashtags have strayed way beyond the internet. They now appear on billboards, television show titles and product packaging; if you’re brave enough to watch MTV’s Geordie Shore you’ll hear the word “hashtag” dropped into casual conversation, while Ed Miliband’s recent response to the Budget in the House of Commons featured the clumsy phrase “hashtag downgraded Chancellor”. We’re in the middle of a hashtag epidemic. But what purpose, if any, do they serve?

User-experience designer Chris Messina had big dreams for it. Back in August 2007 he tweeted to his followers: “how do you feel about using # (pound) for groups?”, and in doing so unwittingly kickstarted the phenomenon. The # sign was already used to signify groups or topics on the online communication platform IRC, but it took time for Messina’s idea to percolate through Twitter. The tipping point coming in 2009. Early that year the #followfriday tag became a convenient way of telling people about new and interesting people to follow; June saw hashtags become a tool of citizen journalism during the protests following the Iranian election, and in July Twitter linked all hashtags to a search page containing tweets featuring that tag. This was a pivotal moment; it brought clarity to how hashtags could and should be used, but also demonstrated their chaotic, ad-hoc nature.

Anyone can create a hashtag, and anyone can use that hashtag in any context. So they can’t be controlled; they’re used to bring order, but they can easily create disorder in equal measure. The prospect of grabbing attention on social media, however, is a temptation that brands can’t resist, and they’ve embraced the erratic hashtag with a passion. “’Engagement’ has become the holy grail for advertisers,” says Katy Lindemann, a freelance strategic planner. “It’s a largely meaningless term, but it’s usually a melée of different metrics that are used as a proxy for ‘paid some kind of attention to our thing’.”

But there have been many instances where brands have tried to get people to “join the conversation” and failed. When, in 2009, a social-media underling working for Habitat decided to advertise £2 000 (about R16 000) gift cards tagged #mousavi (the name of the Iranian opposition leader), there was an immediate outcry. But others found themselves following in Habitat’s footsteps; the roll call of disastrous trips into hashtag land includes such respected names as McDonald’s, Qantas, Vodafone and, um, Hertfordshire Police.

The world of marketing, however, remains undaunted. Whereas in the past we might have been exhorted to note down a URL, or search for a term on Google, the hashtag is the new call to action – and, in many cases, has become the tagline for an entire advertising campaign. In recent months, Adidas has instructed us to #takethestage, Diet Coke to #showyourheart and Nike to #makeitcount, all with the hope of “igniting” some kind of “digital conversation”.

“The theory,” says Amy Kean, head of consumer innovation at social-media marketing firm Socialyse, “is that the hashtag can build a bit of intrigue. We recently promoted a Marian Keyes novel where one of the characters had a shovel list – people who she wanted to hit in the face with a shovel before she died. The hashtag #shovellist was a way of getting people to take part in the campaign without explicitly telling them to buy the book.”

Chris Messina probably never envisaged that his beloved hashtags would, one day, be used by people to unwittingly promote products, and it’s evident that much of their original purpose has been lost.

“Marketing hashtags are pointed internally, at the board,” says Dan Shute, Managing Partner at advertising firm Creature, of London. “Graphs can be drawn to show the CMO just how exciting the conversation is around their latest activity. But they very rarely offer any kind of benefit to real people – or ‘consumers’, as we insist on calling them.” The supposedly imminent introduction of hashtags to Facebook is similarly unlikely to benefit its many users, other than to gather information about their interests and facilitate more targeted advertising.

But there are still glimpses of Messina’s original vision. The hashtags that appear on television before programmes start have facilitated a rich back-channel of discussion surrounding that show – with perhaps no better example than the BBC’s Question Time. “Independent columnist Grace Dent has often said that Twitter is like a massive sofa that you can sit on with all your friends and watch telly together,” says Nat Guest, whose weekly BBC Question Time “watch-along”, in east London, is almost a real-life manifestation of a hashtag. “On the night we actually have two separate hashtags projected on to the wall,” she continues. “There’s one for the tweetalong itself (#QTwatch) so that we can speak to each other and see how people are reacting within the room, and the official #BBCQT one so that we can see what’s happening in the outside world.”

Gizmodo writer Sam Biddle describes hashtags as “one of the worst, toxic forms of internet pollution”. But as they swamp us, their omnipresence has created a strangely beautiful and silly social-media vernacular, where someone might tweet about their dinner and add the hashtag #dinner, in the knowledge that no one would dream of actually clicking on #dinner – a tacit admission of the impotence of hashtags and the inconsequential nature of social media in general.

American Express recently trialled a method of buying products on Twitter via hashtags, but it seemed to be imposing functionality on a symbol that’s become largely functionless. Indeed the ability of many Twitter clients to mute posts that contain particular hashtags has facilitated what might be the hashtag’s biggest achievement: to allow us to completely ignore them. – The Independent

Audi, T-Mobile Team Up for In-Car Data Service

There’s a little secret about connecting to the Internet from your car: You usually must use your smartphone to do so, running up potentially shocking data charges along the way. T-Mobile and Audi want to make that cheaper for you with its new in-car data plan by offering wireless connectivity for $ 15 per month.

Audi Connect services are already sophisticated, creating a Wi-Fi network inside the vehicle that can be accessed by up to eight devices at the same time. Launched in 2011, it was the first of its kind, letting drivers access special versions of Google Voice Local Search, “My Audi Destination,” which works with Google Earth to display up to 50 destinations on the car’s screen. That gives you a look at your surroundings from Google Street View, a welcome sight to a lost and weary traveler.

PHOTO: Audi's Connect Service is powered by T-Mobile Internet connectivity.

Audi

Audi’s Connect Service is powered by T-Mobile… View Full Size

PHOTO: Audi's Connect Service is powered by T-Mobile Internet connectivity.

This new plan requires the Audi owner to plunk down $ 450, which sounds like a fortune, but that includes 30 months of wireless data service. That’s 15 bucks a month. Not bad. Or, you can choose a $ 30 per month-to-month plan that doesn’t require a service contract. There are a few pricing increments between those two, as well.

Audi currently offers a six-month free trial of wireless data service when you buy the car, so if you don’t mind paying that $ 450 up front, it ends up being a better deal than exceeding the limits of your smartphone’s data plan as your in-car link to the Internet.

SEE ALSO: Is the 2013 Chevy Volt Worth It?

Another advantage of not using your smartphone for in-car connectivity is that you can either conserve battery power, or avoid having to plug your phone in every time you want to use it as a communications link in your car. For everyday use, that small inconvenience can quickly become an annoyance.

After testing a variety of cars with cellphone connectivity, I can vouch for the fact that running apps from your phone to be displayed in your car — especially GPS — runs a battery down with disconcerting rapidity. And there’s no need to distract yourself fumbling with a smartphone at 70 mph either.

I think this kind of pricing for this new partnership between T-Mobile and Audi will become commonplace in the near future, and is destined to go even lower. Readers, do you think this $ 15/month deal is worth it? Let us know in the comments.

Drivers Know Cell Use Is Dangerous But Drive Anyway

A survey released today by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that while most drivers understood the dangers of using electronic devices while behind the wheel, a large percentage used them anyway.

According to the survey, released as part of the NHTSA’s recognition of April as National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, approximately 660,000 drivers used cellphones or manipulated electronic devices while driving during daylight hours, numbers that have held steady since 2010.

While fiddling with a stereo or iPod is dangerous and distracting while driving, according to the NHTSA, texting and hand-held cellphone use were considered more dangerous and have garnered more attention from recent surveys and studies.

The NHTSA survey also found that 74 percent of drivers support a ban on hand-held cellphone use, while 94 percent believe texting while driving should be outlawed. On average, these drivers believed the fines for these offenses should be at least $ 200, according to the report.

Texting while driving is currently outlawed in 39 states and the District of Columbia (see map below). Hand-held cellphone use is outlawed in 10 states, and the District of Columbia.

Wireless provider AT&T released a texting while driving survey of its own last month. Ninety-eight percent of the drivers it polled also said they understood the dangers of texting while driving.

Despite the fact that almost all drivers surveyed by AT&T said texting and driving was dangerous, 43 percent of teenage drivers said they still did it, while 49 percent of older commuters admitted the same.

“Many drivers see distracted driving as risky when other drivers do it, but do not recognize how their own driving deteriorates,” NHTSA Administrator David Strickland said in a statement. “I urge all motorists to use common sense and keep their attention focused solely on the task of safely driving.”

No doubt, some new gadgets and technologies have become distractions, making it more difficult for drivers to focus on the road. But innovation, rather than simply cutting back on device usage, can possibly be the fix to the problem.

States that have outlawed hand-held cellphone use do allow other hands-free methods of talking, whether it be a speakerphone, voice activated system or an in-ear Bluetooth or wired headset.

Samsung recently introduced S Voice Drive with its Galaxy S 4 phone. The software allows drivers to do such things as play music and get directions while keeping their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel.

Admittedly, fears that some of the new gadgets will contribute to distracted driving may still be warranted. CNET reported that Google’s Glass, for instance, has already been discussed as possibly becoming banned for West Virginia drivers before it’s even gone on sale. The futuristic, eye-glass headset computer projects images in front of the eyes, showing directions and notifications. Google Glass also allows users to engage in hands-free video chatting and Internet searching. Talk about distracted driving …
