Imphal, April 05 2013 : A lady doctor of RIMS was found dead this afternoon at Bashikhong Wangkhei Loumanbi paddy fields under Irilbung police station, Imphal East district.

A JAC constituted against the suspected murder case has called an indefinite general strike all over the State with effect from 6 am tomorrow.

According to information culled from the spot, some local people came across a female body inside a canal which passes through the paddy fields at about 2 pm today.

The deceased was later identified to be Dr Ningombam Satyabhama (31) d/o N Tomba of Kakwa Selungba Leikai under Singjamei police station.

There were injury marks on Dr Satyabhama’s neck which appeared to have been made by strangulation with a cloth or slit with a sharp object.

The face had not only turned black but had started decomposing.

Dr Satyabhama was working as Junior Research Fellow under the DBT Project at RIMS Pathology Department.

She reportedly left home in the afternoon of April 3 saying that she would be staying in RIMS quarters.

Family members remained silent thinking that Satyabhama had eloped.

“But when we heard that a female body had been found at Bashikhong paddy fields, we went there to check and the deceased turned out be our sister”, said Harsh, younger cousin of Satyabhama.

A leather lady bag and a plastic bag were found near the corpse which has been picked up and deposited at JNIMS mortuary by Irilbung Police.

A case has also been registered at the police station.

Meanwhile, taking strong exception to the unexplained death of Dr Satyabhama which looked like murder, people of Kakwa and adjoining areas have blocked NH-2 (Imphal-Moreh highway) since late afternoon today.

The protesters maintained that they would continue with all sorts of agitation until and unless all the culprits involved in the murder are awarded exemplary punishment.

The Government should be held accountable for any untoward incident that breaks out in the course of the agitation.

They raised slogans like “Book the murderers” etc.

As police could not control the agitation, vehicles plying on the road were diverted to other roads on both sides of the highway stretch near Kakwa.

Nevertheless, police are keeping a sharp vigil in the area adjoining Singjamei police station.

Meanwhile, forensic science experts, police personnel and local MLA Thongam Bishwajit went to the paddy field for spot verification in the evening.

Later, a public meeting was held following which a Joint Action Committee was constituted against the suspected case of murder.

The JAC has also decided to call an indefinite general strike from 6 am tomorrow .

However, education and essential services would be exempted.
