Imphal, January 29 2013: The Court of Additional Sessions Judge Manipur East has sentenced a graft-tainted State Government official to three years prison term and imposed Rs 50,000 penalty.

According to Director of Prosecution Ng Tejkumar the verdict was passed by Additional Sessions judge Manipur East M Menjorkumar yesterday, 20 years after the case commenced.

It is said that the guilty person namely W Mayonmi Tangkhul (55) s/o W Peter of Phungreitang village in Ukhrul district, and a Senior Accountant in the Directorate of Treasury and Account, was pulled up for fraudulent withdrawal of money amounting to Rs 3,31,718 when the accused person was the Treasurer of Ukhrul Sub Treasury Office.

Tejkumar explained that Mayonmi tampered treasury documents and withdrew the said amount even though the District Education Office submitted a bill for only Rs 1,31,718 on July 7, 1988 .

With the police station concerned subsequently filing an FIR suspecting Mayonmi’s involvement in the fraudulent withdrawal case, legal proceedings were initiated against the accused under various sections including clause related to Prevention of Corruption.

Iterating that the case had been pending for over two decades, Tejkumar said along with penalty of Rs 50,000, the case actually merits seven years imprisonment of the guilty person but the Court shortened the jail term taking into account advancing age of Mayonmi, prolonged indisposition of the case and the fact that the accused has 11 children to care for.

Further informing that Additional Public Prosecutor Ksh Bimola Devi represented the Government with advocate A Rupachandra counsel of the accused person, the Director pointed that inspite of the case extending to over two decades the verdict yesterday is yet another reminder that law will ultimately catch up with corrupt individuals.

Disclosing that a number of corruption cases are being contested in the Court of law, Tejkumar exuded confidence that the remaining cases will consume less time.
