Gandhi remembered on death anniversary

Imphal, January 30 2013: The State today joined the Nation in paying homage to the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary observed as ‘Martyrs Day’ .


While Government of Manipur organised the 65th Martyrs’ Day commemoration function at Gandhi Memorial Hall here, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee observed the event at the adjacent Congress Bhavan.


At GM hall, Governor Gurbachan Jagat led the gathering in offering floral tributes to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi and portraits of other freedom fighters.


PHE Minister I Hemochandra, MLAs, Chief Secretary DS Poonia, DGP Y Joykumar, top civil and security officials also joined in paying homage to the Father of the Nation.

The observance began with teachers and students of Shree Shree Bal Mukund dev Government Music College presenting patriotic songs followed by observance of two minutes silence.


At Congress Bhavan, party legislators and workers garlanded the statue of Mahatma Gandhi and laid wreaths.


It was on this day in 1948 that Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated while on his way to offer daily prayers.


The day is also observed as Anti Leprosy Day.
