Imphal, January 30 2013: Noting laudable achievements by State paddlers inspite of canoeing and kayaking being at a comparatively nascent stage, Governor Gurbachan Jagat has emphasised on Manipur hosting more National level competitions to sustain the sports movement in the State.

Speaking as the inaugural function chief guest of the 23rd National Canoe Sprint Championship 2012-13 this afternoon at the newly developed Water Sports Complex at Komlakhong, Gurbachan Jagat welcoming the participants stated that canoeing and kayaking is a fairly new sport in Manipur with the State Association formed only in 1995 .

“But during the short period, it has been able to produce about 33 international paddlers besides five National coaches.

This shows that the Association is active and works hard towards the development of the sport in the State,” said the Governor.

Referring to existence of the two water sports complex in the State, one at Takmu and the latest one at Komlakhong, and noting the cost factor in developing and maintaining such complexes, he wondered whether Manipur can sustain the two complexes and fully utilise available facilities by both the Association and the paddlers.

Congratulating the State Association for their efforts in organising the Championship and conveying gratitude to the National Federation for awarding the same to Manipur, he also exuded confidence that endeavours of the championship organisation committee under the stewardship of Works Minister Dr Kh Ratankumar Singh and his team would yield rich dividends.

Applauding the event for taking responsibility of not only developing the new Complex but also for acquiring new boats and paddles for, Gurbachan also expressed confidence that about 700 paddlers of 20 teams would be provided satisfactory accommodations so that the paddlers can concentrate on the competition.

Manipur, because of its location, does not have much opportunity to conduct national level championships, but this year this is the third discipline in which the State has conducted national level competitions, pointed out the Governor.

thanking all the participants for coming to Manipur, he also acknowledged that any team from Manipur has to travel the tiring journey for every competition held outside the State.

Spreading the championships across the country provides an avenue for the sportspersons to know every part of the country, which will bring better understanding among different communities and I hope this championship will provide an impetus to our young paddlers and motivation to specialize in canoeing and kayaking and will also attract more youth towards this sport, said the chief guest.

“As everyone is aware, the field of sports has become very competitive and every discipline has to compete with other disciplines not only for spectators but also for competitors.

Some games have large followings, but other games are also growing at a fast pace.

The objective is to attract more for better competition, leading even to amendments to the rules to make it more competitive and attractive” .
