Gaikhangam asks cops to behave

Imphal, December 21, 2013: Criss-crossing the twin capital districts as part of infrastructure development inspection visit today, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam outrightly told police personnel to address the citizens courteously.


The DyCM who assessed existing infrastructure in Manipur Baptist Convention complex and Imphal East district police station, advised uniformed personnel at the latter venue to strive for establishing healthy police-public relationships.


Reminding that indecorous conduct or abusing the citizens do not justify status of security forces as protectors of the common people, he stated that politely addressing the citizens is an important factor to win the people’s confidence which will eventually make the task of security personnel more convenient and effective.


Asking police personnel to abstain from any activity that could tarnish image of the law enforcement force or embarrass their colleagues along with suggesting that emphasis should be on close coordination amongst various police units, Gaikhangam also assured to take relevant measures for infrastructure development of Imphal East district police.


further stating that police firmly tackle activities of anti-social elements, he demanded maximum contribution from security forces in achieving all round development of Manipur.

Replying to a query from newspersons about police landline telephones not functioning properly, the DyCM assuring to look into the matter also opined that wide use of mobile phone might be responsible for neglecting landline connection.


Noting that police department is facing shortage of vehicles, he affirmed that steps to address man-power and vehicle inadequacy would be worked out at the earliest.


Due to Imphal East police station being one of the recent facilities there is need for further infrastructure provision, said Gaikhangam along with stressing on the need for separate block for women police personnel.


After inspecting the police station’s office rooms, training facility, malkhana, bedrooms and kitchen during which he also spotted ladies’ clothes hung in the kitchen Gaikhangam advised SP concerned for a temporary arrangement of ladies’ changing enclosure, repair damaged ceiling of the bed-room and keep the bed-room clean and attractive.


On seeing three females in the custody along with an infant, Gaikhangam asked the SP to provide a Kouna mat so that the baby could stay warm.


Principal Secretary (Home) Dr J Suresh Babu and DGP Shahid Ahmed also accompanied the DyCM.


At MBC complex, Gaikhangam discussed about construction of a tribal girls’ hostel under the funding of Ministry of Tribal Affairs with the Parliamentary Secretary (Tribal Affairs) Victor Keishing and MBC general secretary Rev Dr W Konghar.


The girls hostel, said to be a part of the Government’s plan for similar facility in all the districts, will have 50 beds complying with G-plus size specification and serve as Imphal West accommodation for the girl students.


Setting November next as the deadline for completing the hostel construction, Gaikhangam also mooted construction of another tribal girls’ hostel for Imphal East district in Liberal College.


It is said that two tribal girls’ hostels have already been constructed in Senapati district.


Rev Konghar also presented a memento to the DyCM.
