Imphal, December 26 2013: Even though limited supply of LPGs to the distributors is said to be the chief factor for shortage of cooking gas in the State, the situation is set for improvement in the coming days.

With high demand for LPG in some hostile parts of the world during the winter months said to be normal phenomenon contrary to the refineries not increasing quantum of production, the entire country is said to be besieged with the problem of cooking gas shortage in the last 1-2 month.

According to a source from the Sekmai-based IOC Gas Bottling Plant, bullet tankers (LPG carriers) could not ensure constant supply to the IOC facility consequently affecting supply to the distributors.

It is said that nearly 80 percent of the country’s requirement is dependent on import of LPG from global refinery firms.

With the refineries reportedly focused on catering to huge demand from countries in the Northern Hemisphere, where winter months are most severe, supply to India has been consequently affected in the last two months, explained the IOC source.

As the North Eastern States are not immune from such global crisis in production of LPG the impact is being felt by the consumers, said the source while adding that refineries in the region are able to cope with only 30 percent of the region’s requirement.

On the brighter side, the source confided that the situation will slightly improve in the next few days as supply by bullet tankers has resumed even though it is far from being normal.
