Daniel Craig named by U.N. to lead anti-mine efforts

Whether it’s Q’s fancy gadgets or his famed “license to kill,” the name James Bond is synonymous with weaponry. But the latest actor to play him is now leading a disarmament crusade.

Daniel Craig’s latest mission comes not from M or even Judi Dench, but from U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who named him the first U.N. Global Advocate for the Elimination of Mines and Explosive Hazards.

Mr. Ban thanked the British actor at a brief New York ceremony on Tuesday for his support for the U.N. goal of a mine-free world.

“Along with moviegoers worldwide, I have been on the edge of my seat watching Mr. Craig, as James Bond, defuse ticking time bombs with seconds to spare,” the secretary-general said. “I am even more excited that Mr. Craig has agreed to use his star power to draw attention to the noble causes of mine destruction and mine awareness.”

Mr. Ban said the actor will serve in the post, raising political and financial support for U.N.-led anti-mine efforts, for three years. The appointment was timed to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action.
