Pele’s son named coach of Brazilian club

Rio de Janerio: One of the sons of soccer legend Pele has been named coach of Mogi Mirim, the Brazilian Serie B club said.

The appointment of Edson Cholbi Nascimento, known as Edinho, was announced on Facebook by Mogi Mirim’s president, former Brazil great Rivaldo, Xinhua reported.

“Edinho has worked as an assistant to several great coaches at Santos, like [Vanderlei] Luxemburgo and Muricy [Ramalho] and I think he has what it takes to do well at Mogi,” Rivaldo wrote.

The 44-year-old will replace Claudinho Batista, who was axed after Mogi Mirim’s 3-1 defeat to Botafogo last week.

Edinho was released from jail in November after appealing a 33-year prison sentence for laundering money to a drug gang.

Before accepting the Mogi Mirim job, he was an assistant coach for Santos, where his father scored 1,091 goals from 1,116 matches from 1956 to 1974.
