Political parties jostle with each other to ‘hijack’ Ambedkar’s legacy


New Delhi: On Ambedkar Jayanti, political parties are jostling with each other to appropriate the legacy of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar.


Amidst criticism by opposition parties that it is appropriating the legacy of Dr BR Ambedkar, the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) and the rashtrya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) have organised several programmes to honour the chief architect of Indian Constitution.


The RSS has launched “ek mandir, ek kua and ek samshaan” (one Temple, One well, and one cremation ground) to end untouchability and integrate Dalits. This program was launched in March.

The RSS has also organised a book release function in New Delhi. It is also planning to publish a special book- a compilation of works of Dr BR Ambedkar.

The BJP has organised programs on Ambedkar jayanti at district levels across India. BJP President Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh kicked start Bihar campaign with a rally in Patna with an aim at wooing Dalit vote bank ahead of the crucial Bihar assembly elections.


The Bahujan Samaj Party president Mayawati too, has organised a program in Lucknow on Dr Ambedkar’s birth anniversary.


The Congress is also schduled to roll out a year long program to woo Dalits.
