They came to Hartleyvale with a mission and at the end of 70 minutes in the fourth Test Friday night it was mission accomplished for the Investec South Africa women’s hockey team as they romped to a 4-0 victory over Belgium after leading 3-0 at half-time.

SA scored through Pietie Coetzee (third minute), Lisa Deetlefs (14th), Bernie Coston (29th) and Celia Evans (61st) to take a 2-1 lead in the six-Test series with two to play.

The South Africans were quicker to the ball, more inventive in their attack construction and alert to the unforeseen, reacting quickly to clean up mistakes.

In the second minute Coston’s pace and control set up the first penalty corner. Goalkeeper Aisling D’Hooghe glove-saved Coetzee’s fierce effort to her right. A minute later Dirkie Chamberlain, strong on the ball, won the second PC and this time Coetzee went low to the keeper’s right and the ball clattered into the backboard (1-0).

It was the world record goalscorer’s 278th goal in her 279th Test match.

A stunning move down the right instigated by the strong-running Coston, who brushed off several tackles, was carried on by Shelley Russell, in her 200th Test, and the double Olympian’s cross from the right floated tantalisingly across the goals with no-one able to get a stick on it.

Marcelle Manson and Nicolene Terblanche made two critical tackles during the match, while SA goalkeeper Phume Mbande made telling saves from Jill Boon and Louise Versavel and made pulled off timely interventions to snuff out dangerous Belgian incursions into the strike zone.

In the 13th SA put together an eight-pass attack that almost led to a goal but it did produce the girls in green and gold’s third PC and Lisa Deetlefs volleyed in the rebound off keeper D’Hooghe after Lilian du Plessis had forced the initial save (2-0).

Coston struck in the 29th minute after Coetzee had layed off the pass and SA turned around 3-0 to the good.

In the 47th captain Marsha Cox intercepted in midfield and drove forward before laying off to Kathleen Taylor, whose shot resulted in SA’s fifth PC, Du Plessis’ conventional strike steaming just outside the near post.

Midway through a topsy-turvy second half Belgium’s Axelle Wouters found space on the left, but her strike cannoned into the sideboard.

In the 61sth Tarryn Bright freed up Sulette Damons, who raced upfield before smashing an early diagonal ball from the right to a lurking Celia Evans, who finished off the move and extinguished any hopes Belgium had of making a comeback

The fifth Test is at 4pm Sunday with the sixth and final Test at 7pm Monday.

London – Newcastle striker Loic Remy will miss his team’s derby showdown against Sunderland on Saturday after failing in a bid to get his suspension overturned.

French star Remy, on loan from QPR, was sent off along with Norwich midfielder Bradley Johnson after the pair clashed late in Tuesday’s 0-0 Premier League draw at Carrow Road.

Newcastle appealed against the subsequent ban, but while Johnson’s own effort to clear his name was upheld, Remy’s fell on deaf ears and the forward, who has 11 goals this season, will now miss the league games against Sunderland, Chelsea and Tottenham.

A Football Association statement said: “An independent regulatory commission heard two claims of wrongful dismissal today both in relation to the Norwich City versus Newcastle United game on Tuesday.

“The claim involving Norwich’s Bradley Johnson was upheld, meaning his three-match suspension is withdrawn.

“The claim involving Newcastle’s Loic Remy was dismissed, therefore his three-match suspension remains with immediate effect.

“Both players had been dismissed for violent conduct.”

New Delhi, January 30 2014: A Delhi court today issued a production warrant for March 29 against rights activist Irom Sharmila after she did not appear before it in a case lodged against her for allegedly attempting suicide during her fast-unto-death here in 2006 .

The Manipuri activist, on a fast for over 12 years demanding repeal of the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in her home state, failed to turn up before the court today despite its direction on December 19 last year.

Metropolitan Magistrate Akash Jain issued the production warrant and the matter is fixed for recording of statement of prosecution witnesses in the case.

On March 4 last year, the court had put 40-year-old Sharmila on trial after she had refused to plead guilty for the offence of attempting to commit suicide (section 309 IPC) .

If convicted, Sharmila, who is out on bail in this case, faces a maximum jail term of one year.

Popularly known as the ‘Iron Lady’, Sharmila, who has been on fast since 2000 and is fed through a nasal tube, had earlier told the court that her protest was non-violent.

She had also rejected the charge that she had attempted suicide in 2006 .

While framing charges against her, the court had said, “It is alleged against you (Sharmila)…that you on October 4, 2006 at about 8 PM sat at Jantar Mantar on a fast unto death uptil 11.30 PM on October 6, 2006 and refused to get your medical check up done and thereby, committed an act with an intention or knowledge that under such circumstances death may be caused and thereby, committed an offence under Section 309 of IPC” .

Her counsel had earlier told the court that Sharmila has already spent one year in judicial custody which is the maximum sentence for the offence under section 309 of IPC.

Chiefs hoping to consolidate lead

Johannesburg – Kaizer Chiefs will take on Moroka Swallows at Dobsonville Stadium with the aim of retaining their momentum and consolidating their lead at the summit of the Premiership table.

Amakhosi midfielder Willard Katsande said they were looking for maximum points from the encounter following last Thursday’s 1-0 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns in Pretoria.

“What I can say is that, we are not going there for a vacation,” Katsande said.

“We know Swallows very well and since they are playing at home they will be coming to us but we are prepared.

“Our preparations have been good so far and I think we have the right game plan.”

The Zimbabwean-born player said Swallows would nevertheless pose a tough challenge to the team.

“Its going to be tough, I don’t want to lie,” he said.

“We just have to win at all costs to keep our momentum.”

Katsande said Chiefs players that were part of Bafana Bafana’s 2014 African Nations Championship (Chan) campaign had turned their focus on their club duties.

Bafana crashed out of the tournament following a heavy 3-1defeat against Nigeria in their final group A clash at Cape Town Stadium.

“As soon as they entered Naturena, their focus has been on Kaizer Chiefs and they were not even talking about the Bafana issue,” Katsande said.

A win for Chiefs against Swallows would see them stretch their lead at the top over second-placed Sundowns to 11 points, while victory for the hosts will launch them into the top four. – Sapa

Compensated trucks lacked updated documents

Source:

Imphal, January 29 2014: Even as the Government has already compensated owners of 39 trucks which were burnt down during the total bandh called in pursuit of the demand for granting full fledged district status to Sadar Hills, it has come to light that most of these trucks did no possess complete documents necessary for operating on National Highways.

Although most of the trucks did not possess complete documents, the State Government, as decided in a Cabinet meeting, gave compensation out of mercy, informed a well placed source.

According to an official of Transport Department, trucks operating on National Highways should possess up to date RC book, national permit, fitness certificate, pollution related documents/certificates, local permit and insurance documents.

File pic of a truck set aflame during the Sadar Hills blockade in 2011
File pic of a truck set aflame during the Sadar Hills blockade in 2011

Most of the trucks operating on Imphal-Dimapur highway, Imphal-Jiribam highway and Imphal-Jessami highway do not have complete set of these documents.

Notably, Sadar Hills District-hood Demand Committee imposed a total bandh on National Highways from August 1, 2011 to October 1, 2011 .

During the prolonged bandh, a number of trucks transporting essential commodities were set ablaze.

Out of the total trucks vandalised, the State Government selected 39 trucks for paying compensation ranging from Rs two lakh to Rs eight lakh.

The Government spent around Rs 1.5 crore in paying compensation for the 39 trucks.

Out of the 39 trucks, two/three trucks had insurance cover.

As such their compensation amounts were adjusted with the amounts entitled to them from their insurance policies.

One transporter, on condition of anonymity, told that the Government cannot give compensation for the burnt down trucks if one goes strictly by established rules.

No compensation was paid in the past too.

It was for the first time vandalised trucks were compensated during the episode of Sadar Hills bandh.

Of the hundreds of trucks transporting goods to Imphal from Jiribam, Silchar, Dimapur and Guwahati, only one per cent has complete set of documents.

Again, these trucks do not apply for any insurance policy except for a few trucks purchased anew.

One major reason for truck owners to stay away from insurance policies is the large amount of premium they have to pay periodically.

Moreover, truck owners are deterred from joining insurance schemes as no insurance policy covers damages inflicted by UG groups.

Of the compensation amounts paid for the 39 trucks, for some trucks the amounts were calculated taking into account goods they brought in but were destroyed together with the trucks.

But according to rules, agencies or traders (of the goods brought in by the trucks) should bear the loss caused by such vandalism on highways.

Agencies and traders may recuperate what they lost from insurance companies.

But most of the traders and agencies based at Imphal except for some very big and well known establishments do not apply for insurance cover.

Trucks are only earning the fare loading themselves with whatever goods they can lay their hands on at Guwahati, Dimapur or Silchar.

There is no clear cut understanding regarding who stands to lose when any unfortunate incidents happen on the way.

At times of accidents, truck owners too stand to lose.

But in case the traders/agencies have insurance cover, goods they lose on the way may be recuperated from insurance companies.

Goods destroyed together with the 39 trucks set ablaze during Sadar Hills bandh were compensated by the Government as owners (of the goods) did not join any insurance policy.

With majority of the traders/agencies abstaining themselves from insurance policies, the Government would be compelled to spend huge amounts of money in paying compensation for trucks as well as goods they bring in whenever trucks are set ablaze on highways which has become more of a common practice than the exception in the State.
