Imphal, January 24 2014 : With the objective of making legal aid accessible to under trial prisoners, Manipur High Court Chief Justice LK Mohapatra today opened a legal aid clinic inside Sajiwa Central Jail.
Speaking as chief guest at the opening function of the legal aid clinic which was organised by the Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA), Chief Justice LK Mohapatra exuded confidence that the newly opened legal aid clinic would make legal aid accessible to the jail inmates.
Majority of the inmates do not have the capacity to consult lawyers and fight in Courts the charges levelled against them.
This disadvantageous situation is not specific to Manipur.

Under trial prisoners across the country have been enduring the same situation, he said.
Now the jail inmates can seek legal advice from volunteers working at the clinic and in time they would be able to file petitions at lower Courts, Subsidiary Courts and even High Court, stated Chief Justice Mohapatra.
The clinic would enable inmates to consult lawyers with the help of volunteers working at the clinic without paying any money, the Chief Justice added.
ADGP ( Prisons in-charge) P Doungel said that the country’s judicial system binds all the citizens of the country.
Conveying solidarity to all the inmates, P Doungel said that he would like to see all the inmates go out of the prison as soon as possible.
As a legal aid clinic has been opened inside the jail premises, the clinic can now help all the inmates expedite their judicial process which would in turn help them go out of the prison, said the ADGP.
