Northeast India presented on the 65th Republic Day Celebrations


India marked its 65th Republic Day in the grand parade held on Rajpath, New Delhi yesterday, the 26th of January, 2014. In one among the spectacular acts presented, while celebrating unity in diversity, was the showcase of a series of tableaux from Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya.


ASSAM

The tableau of Assam was a tribute to the legendary Bhupen Hazarika, also known as the Bard of the Brahmaputra.


Bhupen da was a great lyricist, musician, singer, poet and film-maker from Assam. His songs, written and sung mainly in Assamese by himself, are marked by humanity and universal brotherhood and have been translated and sung in many languages, most notably in Bengali and Hindi. He received the Padma Shri in 1997, Padma Bhushan in 2001, Padma Vibhushan in 2012, Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 1992, and many other national awards.


ARUNACHAL PRADESH

The tableau of Arunachal Pradesh depicted the Aji Lhamu dance – one of the most prominent folk dances of the state. This dance is for warding off the evil spirits.


MEGHALAYA

The theme of this tableau was arecanut — a popular cash crop of Meghalaya.


Arecanut, tezpate, betel, short-staple cotton, jute, mesta, mustard and rapeseed are some of the important cash crops in the state. Arecanut is considered to be a native crop of Malaya. It is basically a tropical plant that grows well in areas right from sea level upto an altitude of 500 m elevation.
