Poppy plants destroyed

Imphal, January 30 2014: Seventeen acres of poppy cultivated areas with more than seventeen lakh poppy plants were destroyed during a special operation conducted jointly by the Narcotics & Affairs of Border (NAB), Manipur under the supervision of SP/NAB, Manipur in co-ordination with NCB, Imphal Sub zone and Imphal East District police in Nongmaiching/ Baruni hill range, Imphal East district on Jan 29 .

According to a statement issued by the PRO of Manipur Police, the special operation resulted in destruction of poppy plants on the eve of their harvesting thereby preventing extraction of large quantity of opium, which is later processed to convert into heroin, a narcotic drug under NDPS Act, 1985 .


In this regard, 2(two) separate cases have been registered at NAB/PS and investigation is going on, it stated.
