Protest held

Imphal, January 21 2014 : Over 500 residents settled in between Lamlong Thong (bridge) and Heikrumakhong staged sit-in protest today to oppose the recent order of the Government of Manipur for expansion of road along the said stretch.

The protest demonstration held at Khurai Nandeibam Leikai Tharo Devi community hall outrightly resolving that widening the road through Government acquisition of 30 metres towards the eastern flank of the road from Lamlong Thong to Heikrumakhong will not be acceptable as such a move would mean massive displacement of the local populace.

According to Yumkhaibam Hemo, secretary of a Committee formed against the Government’s road expansion project, the order for acquisition of patta land upto 30 metres along the road stretch measured from the western flank of the road stands to affect over 150 households and as such the project cannot be acceptable to the people.

Suggesting that the State highway presently running close to the Imphal river bank be realigned as the said stretch is vulnerable to cave-in during the monsoons, the secretary also maintained that if the road widening project is limited to 40 feet then such a move would be considerable.
