Allahabad HC asks UP, Centre to inform it about steps taken for upkeep of Varanasi ghats
The Allahabad High Court todayon Wednesday wanted to know the steps being taken by Uttar Pradesh government and the Centre with regard to the upkeep of the fabled ghats of Varanasi.
A division bench, comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice Dilip Gupta, sought to know from concerned authorities in the state and at the Centre about their coordinated efforts for improving the condition of the scores of ghats along the river Ganges which attracts pilgrims and tourists from far and wide.
The court also asked the state’s Principal Secretary (Urban Development and Planning) to expeditiously complete the framing of “model by-laws” for the maintenance of the ghats, while fixing May 5 as the next date of hearing on the matter.
The order came on a Public Interest Litigation filed by Kautilya Society, a Varanasi-based NGO, which had sought the court’s intervention in “protecting” the ghats of the ancient temple town.
