Bill for Steel Institute may be introduced in Parliament this session




New Delhi: A bill for setting up an institute of national importance under the Ministry of Steel, on the pattern of IITs, is likely to be introduced in the current session of Parliament when it resumes later this month.


“The government has already identified Biju Patnaik National Steel Institute (BPNSI) in Odisha, which the Ministry of Steel will be upgrading to the level of IITs as an institute of national importance. A bill in this regard is likely to be introduced later this month in Parliament,” a steel ministry official said.


The institute will offer graduate, post graduate, doctoral and research programmes with a maximum strength of 5,400, as per the proposal.

The official said the expert committee report on the subject has already been received, and on the basis of that, the HRD ministry has given a go ahead for the institute spread across 500 acres of land.


The institute will have a campus in Bhubaneshwar and will be set up with an initial corpus of Rs 300 crore which will be contributed by Government of Odisha and the Union Ministry, people privy to the information said.
