Nigerian envoy to India condemns Union Minister Giriraj Singh’s racist remark on Sonia’s skin

New Delhi: Nigerian envoy to India OB Okongor on Wednesday condemned Union Minister Giriraj Singh’s controversial and bizarre statement on Congress President Sonia Gandhi. “I believe PM will do right thing on this. I am not going to lodge protest,” said the envoy.

Singh had commented that the colour of Sonia Gandhi’s skin had made her the Congress President. “If Rajiv Gandhi had married a Nigerian and if she wasn’t white skinned, would Congress accept her as a leader”, the BJP Lok Sabha MP from Bihar’s Nawada constituency had said.

After making a controversial and bizarre statement on Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Singh apologized for making such a statement.

Singh had commented that the colour of Sonia Gandhi’s skin had made her the Congress President.

Expressing remorse, Singh said, “Many things are said off the record in many ways but if they have hurt Rahul or Sonia ji in any way, I regret.”

Distancing itself from Singh’s remark, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said that they did not associate themselves with the statement. “One should restrain themselves from making such a statement. Everyone’s focus should be on development and governance,” said the BJP.

The comment received a lot of flak from the Congress party which immediately demanded an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Strongly condemn sexist and racist remarks made by minister Giriraj Singh referring to Sonia Gandhi.
