Imphal, March 19 2013: Against the general belief that Shirui Lily, the State flower is found only in Shirui hills, the rare variety of flower has been discovered in the adjoining hills of the village which are little higher than Shirui hills.

Shirui Lily which once flourished on Shirui hills which is about 2200 metres to 2400 metres above mean sea level has been discovered in Nganu and Ngarey hills which are 2750 metres and 2700 metres high and located at a distance of about a day’s walk from Shirui hills.

The State Nodal Agency for Climate Change, Directorate of Environment has been researching whether Shirui Lily shifted its natural habitat due to climate change.

Talking to , Prof P Kumar of Life Sciences Department, Manipur University stated that Shirui lilies are growing abundantly in Nganu and Ngarey hills.

He said that Shirui lilies were discovered on the two hills about five years back.

It does not look like human beings planted Shirui Lily on the two hills.

Most probably, Shirui lilies started taking roots in the new habitat due to climate change, Prof Kumar opined.

Environmentalist RK Ranjan nevertheless remarked that it needs further study whether the Shirui lilies found in the two hills were already growing there or it was a recent happening.

Notably, the quantum of Lily growing and blooming in Shirui hills has gone down considerably due to overgrowth of a bamboo variety called Tenwa.

On the other hand, an amount of Rs 40.50 lakhs has been sanctioned to take up Green India Mission projects under the National Action Plan for Climate Change.

This was stated by Union Environment and Forest Ministry Jayenti Nattarajan in the Rajya Sabha.

Green India Mission’s State Nodal Officer Additional PCCF RK Srivastav said that Nongmaiching hills have been selected for implementing the Green India Mission in Manipur together with local people.

The project would cover 10 villages located around the hills in the first phase.

Preparation of plant nursery has been already started as a part of executing the project.

Another source informed that State Govt officials would hold a meeting with officials of the Ministry of Forest and Environment at New Delhi on April 3 for due approval of the State’s action plan on climate change.
