Sapre sworn in as Chief Justice of Manipur HC

Imphal, March 23 2013 : Former Justice of Chhattisgarh High Court Abhay Manohar Sapre has been sworn in as the first Chief Justice of Manipur High Court during a simple but impressive function at Raj Bhawan here today. Governor Gurbachan Jagat administered the oath of office and secrecy to Justice Sapre during the swearing-in ceremony held at the Durbar Hall of the Raj Bhawan around 10.30 am.


Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, other Council of Ministers, MLAs, senior advocates and top civil and police officials were also present on the occasion.


Talking to mediapersons after taking oath as the first Chief Justice of Manipur High Court, Justice Sapre assured that he would try his level best to ensure expeditious disposition of all the pending cases in the Gauhati High Court so as to guarantee justice to the people and improve the judicial system in the State.

On the other hand, the newly sworn in Chief Justice of Manipur High Court, administered the oath of office and secrecy to Nameirakpam Kotiswor, former Judge of Gauhati High Court, as a Judge of the state’s separate High Court at its new complex in Chingmeirong at 1 pm today.


The newly set up Manipur HC would start functioning initially with three judges including Justice Sapre and it would be formally inaugurated by Union Law Minister Ashwani Kumar in the presence of Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir on March 25 .


Along with Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura would also have separate High Courts of their own.


With the opening of the three high Courts in three North Eastern states, the total number of high Courts in India has gone up to 24 from previous 21 .
