TMC demands CNB probe

Imphal, February 25 2013: Trinamool Congress (TMC) State legislature wing leader MLA Dr I Ibohalbi has demanded an enquiry by Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) into the case of seizure of psychotropic drugs worth around Rs 15 crore in local market by Thoubal commandos from six persons including the PRO of PIB-DW, Imphal at Pallel yesterday.

Speaking to media persons at his Babupara quarters today, Dr Ibohalbi said that it would be more appropriate to hand over the drug seizure case to CNB rather than CBI whose officials are appointed under or with political influence.

People’s suspicion about involvement of army officers in smuggling drugs was confirmed by yesterday’s seizure, he claimed.

It has turned out that army officers posted in Manipur are not for protection of people but they are here to earn easy by dealing in illegal drugs which poses serious threat to the socio-economic fabric of the State, he said.

Apart from committing all kinds of excesses to the people of Manipur under the immunity guaranteed by AFSPA, Indian army has literally transformed Manipur into a convenient route/market for their clandestine drug trade.

It is high time the Union Government orders a thorough investigation into the clandestine activities of all army officers posted in Manipur, Dr Ibohalbi asserted.

He said that the matter would be raised in the forth coming Assembly session as the foremost agenda of an half-hour discussion.

Saying that the commando who intercepted and seized the drugs along with six smugglers deserve public appreciation, the TMC MLA recommended befitting reward for the commando team for their bravery and dedication to duty.

Ibohalbi also opined that with the exception of the Governor and the Chief Minister, all Ministers, MLAs and high-ranking officials travelling on Imphal-Moreh route should be checked like the general public.
