Imphal, February 23 2013 : In accordance to the guidelines of UGC, service period of Government college Lecturers has been extended from 62 years to 65 years.

A Cabinet meeting held this afternoon with Chief Minister O Ibobi in the chair gave its consent to extend service period of Government college Lecturers up to 65 years.

Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Government spokesman and Education Minister M Okendro stated that the State Cabinet decided to extend the service period of Lecturers up to 65 years as UGC guidelines which made recommendations towards this effect have been already implemented in most other States.

Extension of college Lecturers’ service period would entail more expenditure from the State exchequer.

Nonetheless, the State Government would ensure that there is no problem in matters related to college Lecturers’ service, Okendro said.

In view of the increased enrolment of students in Government colleges in the last five years, the Government felt the need to retain experienced Lecturers in colleges as per UGC guidelines.

That was why, the State Cabinet resolved to extend service period of Lecturers, Okendro explained.

During 2007-08, 41,608 students were enrolled in Government colleges.

The respective figures of students enrolled in Government college for the corresponding years of 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12 were 12150, 22387, 30950 and 36569 .

At present, there are 1019 Lecturers in Government colleges against the sanctioned post of 1303 which means 284 posts are lying vacant.

Moreover, 35 Lectures would retire from service at the end of February.

With the passage of time, college Lecturers would be designated as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor, Okendro stated.

Claiming that the State Government has been working to appoint regular Principals in Government colleges, the Education Minister informed that due notification would issued soon for appointment of regular Principals through MPSC.

He also appealed to all qualified teachers to take part in appointment procedure.

As for Lecturers teaching aided colleges, the Government would first check whether they are under the purview of UGC guidelines.

If possible, the Government initiate necessary procedures to extend their (aided college Lecturers) service period too.

Whatever benefits entitled to part-time Lecturers under UGC guidelines would be given.

However, no definite decision was taken on the matter during the Cabinet meeting, Okendro added.
