Imphal, March 18 2013: Dr Nalinee Taveesin, leader of a delegation from Thailand who landed here today has acknowledged the potential of Manipur for development and economic progress in view of its strategic location on the trilateral Asian highway which would connect India, Myanmar and Thailand.
Speaking to media persons at Tulihal Airport today, Dr Nalinee Taveesin who is permanent representative to the Prime Minister’s Office, Royal Thai Government stated that they have been touring Northeastern States since last Saturday assessing the region’s potential for trade and investment.

Conveying that she was present at the BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) held at Shillong recently, Dr Nalinee stated that their trip is basically aimed at exploring the potential for trade and investment between Thailand and North East India.
“Our visit to the North East is just like an exploratory trip”, she stated.
Both Thailand and India’s North East can prosper if there is close cooperation.
A Free Trade Agreement between India and Thailand is under process.
The same FTA is also aimed at promoting trade and investment between India and Thailand.
Once the trilateral Asian highway which would connect India, Myanmar and Thailand becomes functional, Manipur can certainly embark on a path of progress and prosperity, Dr Nalinee observed.
The Thailand delegation who are visiting Imphal at the initiative of the Indian Chamber of Commerce include General Noparrat Yodvimol and Shiva Thepcharoen, advisors to the Thailand Trade Representatives, Senior Trade Office Puttachart Wongmongkol, Plan and Policy Analyst Supawadee Cherdamanee.
The other delegates include three officials of the Royal Thai Embassy, New Delhi and three officials of the Indian Chamber of Commerce.
The high-level Thai delegation later visited the Governor and the Chief Minister separately.
The delegation also took part in an interactive session with civil society organisations and traders at Classic Hotel.
They will leave Imphal tomorrow.
Notably, Royal Thai Government is reciprocating to India’s Look East Policy with its Look West Policy.
