Imphal, March 17 2013 : People living in five wards of Nambol Municipal Council but located under Konthoujam Assembly Constituency have been hit hard by water scarcity like in the previous year.
Ironically, these areas which are now facing acute shortage of water endure the agony of flood during rainy seasons.
A team of media persons went to Thangtek village, located just about 10 Kms away from the State capital and they saw what the people of the five wards have been suffering from.
No potable water is available in Ward Nos 1, 2, 3, 17 and 18 of Nambol Municipal Council.
Except for one public hydrant point, the residents of these areas are not given any domestic connection, said Councillor Meisnam Priyokumar.
Though the five wards have been notified as Municipal area, they are not getting their due share of development projects/schemes because they are located in the junction of two districts.
Thangtek village (ward no 18) has a population of about 1000.As potable water is not available in the village, all the households are using water from a single community pond.
Ironically, Maklang river which flows to the West of the village often its banks breached during rainy season flooding the village as well as the surrounding paddy fields.
If the river bed is dredged properly and small dams built across it at appropriate points, people’s woes caused by water scarcity can be addressed effectively in addition to enabling cultivation of the surrounding agricultural fields throughout the year, suggested some local seniors.
Thomas Panmei of Hidak Shungba village said that many families of his village are unable send their children to schools for they cannot engage in their agricultural activities profitably.
