Gaikhangam inspects rehab site

Imphal, March 01 2013: For construction of a rehabilitation centre for former underground cadres who have now laid down arms and returned to the mainstream, Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Gaikhangam today inspected a site at Chothe village, Bishnupur district.


The Deputy Chief Minister’s entourage included Commerce and Industries Minister Govindas Konthoujam, Principal Secretary (Home) Dr J Suresh Babu, DGP Y Joykumar and the Bishnupur DC.


After assessing the area where a rehabilitation centre would be constructed, Gaikhangam told media persons that the Government has earmarked 10 acres of land in Chothe village for construction of a rehabilitation centre for former UG cadres who have returned to the mainstream.

The area where the rehabilitation centre would be constructed was earlier occupied by CRPF and army successively.


Currently, the area is occupied by some police and VDF personnel.


Apart from renovating the existing quarters, new and necessary infrastructure would be constructed, Gaikhangam stated.


On being enquired about the capacity of the proposed rehabilitation centre, the Home Minister stated that maximum efforts would be put in to accommodate the maximum number of surrendered UG cadres.


To a query about the hovercrafts which were procured at huge expenditures to flush out UG elements from Loktak lake which now lie idle, Gaikhangam maintained that the hovercrafts would be put into service as and when necessary.
