Even though experts have warned that people who drink alcohol or consume tobacco products habitually are at greater risks of heart attacks and heart failures, the rate of alcohol and tobacco consumption is very high in Manipur, Phungzathang lamented.
He also stated that the State Government has already decided to ban all tobacco products in the State.
Youngsters in hill districts smoke more than their peers in the valley.
This is not a good sign, remarked the Health Minister.
Stating that Mizoram holds the record of being the highest consumer of tobacco products among Indian states, he noted that Mizoram faces maximum number of heart infections.
It is the duty of the State Government to avoid such a grim situation in Manipur, he asserted.
Manipur Heart Foundation president Dr Shyamkishore stated that rising cases of heart attacks and heart failures in Manipur are due to increasing rate of tobacco consumption, obesity, uncontrolled blood pressure and diabetes, increased level of alcohol consumption etc.
