Drug worth Rs 9576 lakhs seized

Imphal, May 26 2013: A team of Thoubal district police com-mando unit has arrested two individuals, from whom sub-stantial quantities of psycho- tropic drugs have also been recovered.

The worth of the seized drugs in the international market has been put at Rs 95.76 lakhs, according to a statement issued by Superintendent of Police, Thoubal district.

It is said that based on reliable information about the movement of smugglers involved in ferrying/transport- ing illegal items/articles in and around Lilong Loumanga, Dam and Kaleikhong areas with an intent to ferry/transport the illegal items to va- rious places of Manipur and Myanmar the commando team under the supervision of SP Dr Ak Jhalajit Singh carried out frisking and checking at Ubakthong turning area.

With specific focus on ve-hicles coming from Dam area towards Chingkham Makha in order to reach the National Highway No.2 (Imphal-Moreh), the commando team reportedly spotted and stop-ped a Maruti Gypsy at around 12.30 pm.

Upon checking of the vehicle (NL04C/1147) occupied by two persons including the driver, three big packed carton boxes wrapped with gun- ny bags were found inside the Gypsy, the statement said and the two as Takhellambam Bokul Singh (51) s/o (L) T Takhel Singh of Wangjing S.K.Leikai, the driver of the vehicle, and Md Tajuddin Saha (39) s/o Md Ajimuddin of Hayel Labuk, Thoubal.

On further checking the boxes in presence of the witnesses, the first box was found containing 16640 strips (1,66,400 tablets) of “Biocet” pseudoephedrine tablets, 7760 strips (77,600 tablets) of the same drugs in second box with the third box containing 7520 strips (75,200 tablets) .

On verification of the two individuals, it was established that the illegal contraband drugs were taken from one Md Wahidur s/o Md Abdus Salam of Lilong Atoukhong to be transported to Moreh.

Both the individuals were arrested and the contraband drugs seized by observing formalities for further necessary legal action.

ln the arest of the two smugglers and seizure of the contraband drugs Officer in-Charge of Lilong Police Station and the general public of Lilong area extended valuable contributions, maintained the SP while urging the general public to extend coope- ration in its campaign against the production, transportation, sale and consumption of contraband drugs and itlicit articles.
