Imphal, May 22 2013 : Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers Rights Authority, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India has awarded All Manipur Trained Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Promoters Consortium (AMAPCON) President Potshangbam Devakanta with Plant Genome Saviour Award 2012 .


Union Minister of State for Agriculture Tariq Anwar handed over the award to Devakanta in a function held at New Delhi today.


The award comprise of Rs One lakh, a citation and a memento.


Dr JM Laishram, Professor and HOD of Plant Breeding and Genetics of Central Agricultural University, who is Devakanta’s facilitator, accompanied him in receiving the award.


Devakanta was chosen for the award in recognition of his effort to conserve and preserve several indigenous rice varieties of Manipur valley.


Devakanta’s name was at the top among 10 awardees chosen from different parts of the country.


He along with his facilitator Dr JM Laishram have registered more than 100 local rice germ plasms under PPV&FR Act 2001 .
