Imphal, May 25 2013 : Consequent to the in-principle approval for granting Rs 309.56 lakhs to the Regional Boxing Foundation run by London Olympics bronze medallist MC Mary Kom, the ace boxer has reportedly chalked out plans to begin construction works of an in-door stadium having boxing arena and requisite facilities.

It is said that Mary Kom, now a mother of three kids, spends nearly Rs 60,000 every month in running her boxing academy at a temporary facility.

The aspiring boxers numbering over 30 are mostly from economically unsound families and from various parts of the state.

“We are so happy with the sports ministry approving the fund for setting up my foundation.

Once the whole structure of the foundation stands before us we are sure we will produce numerous boxers of first rate who will give pride for our country,” Mary said this evening reflecting on the grant from the Central Government for construction of a gymnasium and procurement of equipment.

“Since the ministry has extended its helping for our foundation, we have begun discussion to systematize it in all angles including appointment of best coaches and other related staff.

We are also confident that the ministry will keep on aiding for the foundation time to time to ensure best boxers are produced from it,” she said.

Mary expressed her desire to appoint coaches who possess degrees and had excelled in national and international level competitions.

“The foundation is not for me, it is for the state and for the whole nation.

The hidden talents of the poor boxers of the state will be tapped and shown to the world to grab laurels.

This is my ultimate vision I have been dreaming since I began by boxing carrier through the pangs of poverty,” the five-time world champion said.

Mary, who has been promoted to the post of superintendent of police (sports) in recognition of her Olympic feat, also hoped that more helping hands would be extended towards developing the foundation.

The foundation is a trust and a non-profit sports academy especially meant for the under-privileged youths with a vision “Quality Boxers with Prestigious Sports Medals from under-privileged potential” .

Recently the state government offered a 3.30 acre plot of land at Meitei Langol, which is close to Mary Kom’s residence for setting up the foundation.

To ensure her students undergo training smoothly during monsoons, she has already begun ground works to construct an indoor hall at the allotted land.
