Street vendors demand due place

Imphal, May 22 2013 : Demanding a suitable place at Khwairamband Keithel, street vendors of Khwairamband Keithel today staged a sit in protest at Keishampat Lairembi.


The protesters later marched to submit a memorandum with five a point charter of demand to the Governor.


However, police thwarted their bid to march till Raj Bhavan.


Street vendors from various districts of the State took part in the sit in protest.


The police also attempted to disrupt the sit in earlier in the day.


All placards, intended to be used during the sit-in protest, were confiscated by the police.


The charter of demands included in their memorandum addressed to the Governor included formulation of concrete State policy for street vendors.


Highlighting the various predicaments confronted by the street vendors, the vendors also demanded providing conducive atmosphere for street vendors of Khwairamband Keithel.


It also urged the Governor to press the authority concerned for bringing the issue of street vendors in the coming Assembly session are, amongst others, the demands incorporated in the memo.


The street vendors have also warned of launching several intense forms of agitation if the demands are not fulfilled immediately.
