As part of the trial of the case currently underway at the Court of District and Sessions Judge, Manipur East, statement of the victim was recorded today in the presence of the two accused persons police commando driver Yumnam William of Khagempalli and actor-singer Yumnam Tarun of Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai.

The victim narrated her ordeal before the Court during the recording of her statement held from 12 noon to 5 pm.

Later, cross examination of her statement was conducted at night.

Speaking to reporters at Cheirap Court complex, Special Public Prosecutor Ng Tejkumar said, the case is underway between the accused persons and State of Manipur under Sessions Trial Case No 2 of 2013 .

Trial started in March this year at District and Sessions Judge, Manipur East after police filed chargesheets against the two accused at CJM Imphal West in December last year, he added.

Saying that the prosecution had already recorded statements of the victim’s mother, victim’s aunt and five other witnesses including restaurant owner, Ng Tejkumar added that 70 percent of the necessary proceedings have been completed by the prosecution so far.

Regarding media reports on slow progress of trial of the case, Ng Tejkumar said that trial of this case is the fastest among all the rape cases in Manipur so far.

Saying that the final verdict of the case is likely to come in two-three months, Ng Tejkumar urged the civil society organisations and women rights bodies to stay calm.

It may be mentioned that a 17-year-old Class XII student (now passed) of TG Higher Secondary School was allegedly drugged and raped by William and Tarun inside a restaurant on Tiddim Road on October 20 last year.
