Source:

Imphal, May 26 2013: There is no sugar in the godown of Con-sumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (CAF&PD) De-partment, and in case the State Governments fails to purchase sugar from sugar mills next month, people may face a se-rious problem on account of acute shortage of sugar.

In accordance to a decision of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, FCI has stopped ferrying the State’s quota of sugar after ferrying the current month’s allocation.

The department is unable to give full quota of sugar en-titled to each district for May month, informed a source.

Monthly quota of sugar for Manipur is 1765 metric tonnes.

Following the Government of India’s decision to make the State Governments purchase sugar from sugar mills directly, the Government of Manipur is taking time to hold tender for selection of sugar transporters.

In the meantime, the State is facing a situation where people may face acute shortage of sugar.

The unfolding situation has even confused CAF&PD Department.

On the other hand, a meeting presided by the Joint Secretary, Ministry of Consumer Affairs a few days back at New Delhi suggested the North Eastern States including Manipur to follow the earlier norm of procuring sugar through FCI for one more year in view of the sick financial condition of these States, added the source.
