Street vendors reject Lamphel market offer

Source:

Imphal, June 20 2013: Decrying Chief Minister O Ibobi’s reported statement that business fails in proper markets when unlicensed vendors are allowed to ply their trade on streets and that street vendors should be shifted to Lamphel , the Khwairamband Keithel Lambi Matai Photpham Phambi Lup has rejected the Chief Minister’s offer to accommodate them at Lamphel.

The group demanded the vacant first floors of the Khwairamband market complexes or an appropriate alternative site.

The Government has already experimented with its idea of accommodating street vendors at Lamphel Sanakeithel about two years back but the experiment failed miserably as very limited customers came there for shopping.

As a result, street vendors, majority of whom have been living hand to mouth, could no longer earn their daily bread.

Ultimately, the street vendors returned to Khwairamband Keithel.

The Chief Minister’s statement to take street vendors back to Sanakeithel smacked of an intention to kill off all street vendors together with their families.

The body made a counter suggestion for shifting away Government offices of Khwairamband Keithel to relatively quieter places like Sanakeithel so that Imphal city is less congested and street vendors have their place at the areas vacated by Government offices.

They also opposed the Government’s plan of abolishing Tombisana High School and build markets in its compound.
