Imphal, June 25 2013: Hailing the court decree of awarding life sentence to the four gang-rape convicts and applauding the police department for appreciable pace of investigation into the rape of a chilly hawker at a Bishnupur district area in March last year, Women action for development (WAD) has saluted the strong resolve of the victim in fighting injustices against women.

A WAD statement issued by its secretary Sobita Mangsatabam acknowledged that courage of the victim and her family in enduring trials and tribulations of the case has provided renewed hope to Manipuri womenfolk that violence against women could be tackled effectively if one is determined to give befitting punishment against perpetrators of criminal acts.

Noting contribution and endeavour of Kabui Mothers’ Association, Rongmei Luam phuam, meira paibis and individual citizens and their relentless support to the victim, WAD also appreciated the judiciary and the police department for their timely intervention and carrying out proper investigation consequently resulting in life imprisonment of the accused persons.

Expressing hope that the police department will continue to live upto the expectation of the people and focus on disposing all pending cases so that justice is delivered to the victims, Sobita said today’s verdict reaffirms that rule of law will eventually prevail.

Describing the decree as a landmark in the legal history of Northeast, Manipur in particular, she, however, regretted that in 15 days of the ongoing Monsoon session of assembly the issue of increasing crime against women and children has not figured/discussed by the legislators.

appealing to all the 60 MLAs, particularly the lady legislators to put up the issue of crime against women and children in the remaining days of the assembly, Sobita reminded all concerned that an effective legislation is inevitable to check crime against women and children.
