CPI’s bid to storm House foiled, 12 Hrs strike called

Imphal, June 20 2013: Communist Party of India (CPI) Manipur State Council has called a 12 hour general strike from 5 am to 5 pm tomorrow.

Informing this to media persons at Irawat Bhawan here today, Secretary of CPI Manipur State Council Dr M Nara Singh and its Struggle Committee’s Chairman N Mangi, Ex-MLA said a democratic movement to take up the issues being faced by the people of the State was staged today.

Around 2000 workers of the State Council tried to storm the Assembly complex while the session was underway.

However, we strongly condemn the obstruction of the State police during the movement by firing tear gas cells and mob bombs injuring many CPI workers, he said.

Maibam Sanahanbi Singh (35) of Tentha got injured on the right leg after being hit by a mob bomb and had to be operated at RIMS.

Such dangerous act of the police is unfortunate for all of us, they added.

They also condemned the police for warning the workers to stand still while they were being fired at with mob bombs.

Such act of the police is a violation of human rights.

Therefore, the State Council has called a State wide general strike from 5 am to 5 pm tomorrow.

Vendors and educational institutions are appealed to remain closed during the general strike, however essential services will be spared from it, they added.

They continued to say that the people has been facing water and electricity problems.

Price of essential commodities are getting higher, crime against women and drug trafficking issues are left unchecked.

As the highway protection force are not stationed along national highways drivers are being murdered and vehicles burnt.

The movement was staged pressing the Government to act regarding all these issues alongwith the appeal to repeal AFSPA and save Irom Sharmila.
