Imphal, June 26 2013: Along with the Manipur Legislative assembly today passing three demands related to Transport (Rs 6,54,41,000), Public Works Department (Rs 488,65,96,000) and Information Technology (Rs 31,96,70,000), Transport and Works Minister Dr Kh Ratankumar announced a series of road development projects envisioned by the Government.

Announcing Government plans for expansion of existing National Highways criss-crossing Manipur, Dr Ratankumar said the Imphal-kangpokpi and Imphal-Pallel sections on NH-2, and Imphal-Yaingangpokpi and Imphal-Churachandpur routes on NH-150 would be expanded from 35 to 45 metres.

Contrary to width of National Highways supposed to be between 30 to 60 metres the State Government is of the view that the expansion plan would be more feasible if the width is limited from to 30 metres at build-up areas and 45 metres at isolated stretches, said the Minister during discussion on demand in the Assembly today.

Stating that priority would be on expansion of the Imphal-Kangpokpi and Imphal-Churachandpur sections, he also informed the house that from Mao to Moreh the NH-2 section has been identified as Asian Highway No.1 .

Asserting that road development projects in the hill areas are being judiciously implemented with the fund provision of CRF, EDF, ADB, NLCPR and PM’s packages, Dr Ratankumar also noted that the Transport Department would be vital organ of the Government in view of the Tulihal Airport becoming an international facility, rail-line connection from Jiribam to Tupul as well as inland waterways.

The transport department has not only become functional at Senapati, Ukhrul and Kangpokpi in the hill areas but are also capable of generating healthy resource to the State exchequer, he added.
