Verdict against rape accused deferred to June 25

Imphal, June 19 2013: While absence of a legal representative in the gang-rape case of an U Morok trader led to further deferment of sentence hearing to June 25, JAC functionaries insisted that the accused persons deserve severest form of punishment for their beastly act.


The quantum of punishment which was supposed to be delivered today did not materialise as defence counsel advocate S Samacharan, representing Kshetrimayum Kenedy s/o Ksh Achou of Kongpal Chanam Leikai, did not depose before the Court of Sessions Judge Manipur West Salam Imocha.


Legal representatives of co-accused IRB Havaldar Laikhuram Rojit (25) s/o L Tomba of Porompat JN Hospital Road, Chungkham Ibomcha (37) s/o Ch Shamu of Thongju Boroi Makhong and IRB rifleman Salam Bijen (34) s/o s Gourababu of uripok Sorbon Thingel presenting their cases before the judge pleaded for leniency/minimum possible punishment to enable the accused trio to repent their guilt and mend their ways.

Speaking to newspersons after formal deferment of the sentence hearing, Special Public Prosecutor Ngangom Tejkumar said that his presentation to the judge emphasised on befitting punishment under the law of the land against the accused persons.


His proposal also included compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the victim as is permissible under relevant law governing the case.


Tejkumar also opined that if there is any leniency in the quantum of punishment possibility of similar crime recurring in the near future cannot in the near future cannot be ruled out.


Meanwhile, Kakomlunglu Kamei, who is convenor of the Joint Action Committee against Inhuman Gang-rape of Jangthailiu Kamei, affirmed that the judgement should correspond with gravity of the crime.


A mild commotion ensued at the court complex as JAC members raised slogans against the accused persons brought to the court with their faces covered.


Even as pushing and shoving between the agitators and the police occurred some womenfolk managed to unmask one of the accused persons.
