Jiribam, June 18 2013: With the heat wave sweeping across Jiribam sub-division for the last few days showing no signs of abetting the normally vacant Jiribam community health centre has been transformed into a crammed health facility.
The sub-divisional headquarters today registered 38 degree Celsius, the hottest recorded in recent years at this time of the year.
The prevailing heat wave is compelling the residents to remain indoors and has forced many educational institutions to declare summer vacation ahead of schedule even as reports have been received about elderly citizens and new-borns requiring medical treatment.
Adding to the people’s woes amid increasing cases of high fever and typhoid outbreak is the man-power inadequacy at the community health centre, the only Government health facility in the sub-division.
Compared to the past when the CHC wards used to remain empty the same health centre is today unable to allot bed to the sick and ailing.
Presently there are only two doctors and about 4/5 medical staff inspite of patients continuing to flock in.
Considered to be malaria and typhoid-prone zone, situation had gone from bad to worst after the microscopist was suspended due to alleged duty negligence during a surprise inspection visit by the Medical Minister and the replacement yet to be deputed at the health centre.
In the prevailing situation, failure of the Government to send the substitute microscopist till date has been evoking serious posers as to whether the suspension was to punish erring medical personnel or compound problems of the denizens.
The people are also demanding that State authorities initiate relevant measures to place some medical personnel, currently utilised at the CMO’s office, at their place of posting which the CHC.
