Death due to Hepatitis C shoots up Separate cell for HC mooted

Imphal, June 19 2013: The death rate due to Hepatitis C has shot up in Manipur considerably.

This information was highlighted by a leader from the Opposition in the State Assembly today.

Legislative wing leader of the Trinamool Congress Dr I Ibohalbi said on Wednesday that although fatalities of people living with HIV/AIDS and TB patients in the State have come down drastically, the rate of death from Hepatitis C has shot up considerably.

Ibohalbi while taking part in the discussion on the demand for Medical, Health and Family Welfare in the House said high quality drugs have greatly contributed in saving many people living with HIV and TB patients in the State and suggested the House to set up a separate cell to treat Hepatitis C which has significantly killed many people in the state.

While discussing on the Environment and Forest demand, he asked who was in actual control of the State Forest Department and said the reserved forest area measuring a total of 730 sq km of the State has shrunk.

Ibohalbi also asked the actual total area covered by jhum cultivations in the hill and accused the Army in the hill of felling trees there by taking advantage of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 .

He said it is the foremost task of the Government to seriously consider the means of livelihood of the hill people first while concentrating on saving the forest.

MLA L Ibomcha on the other hand charged that now drugs manufactured by good companies have not been supplied in the Government hospitals in the state and suggested that enhancement of capabilities of these hospitals will naturally minimize the disturbances caused to the public.
