Imphal, June 10 2013: Offering of floral tributes, literary session and patriotic song competition marked the 13th death anniversary of multi-personality Arambam Samarendra at different locations today.


While Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA), observed the day as Martyrdom Anniversary at Manipur Dramatic Union Hall, Yaiskul Police Lane; Patriotic Writers’ Forum (Manipur) organised a poetry recitation programme at Manipur Press Club; and Manipur State Shumang Leela Council commemorated the death anniversary as Samarendra Memorial Day at Iboyaima Shumang Leela shanglen, Palace Compound.


Attending the anniversary event at MDU Hall as the chief guest, Shri Shri Bal Mukunda Dev Music College (Palace Compound) vice principal Laimayum Devendrajit Sharma remembering Arambam Samarendra as a visionary and committed individual exclaimed that Samarendra’s contribution to the society will remain forever etched in the history of Manipur.


In his brief address as the functional president All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union president Wangkhemcha Shyamjai highlighted Samarendra’s unwavering focus on preservation and promotion of Manipur’s cultural heritage.

He called upon the upcoming generation to follow, try and emulate Samarendra’s principle of cordiality amongst different ethnic community.


Position winners of a patriotic song competition were presented simple gifts on the occasion.


Contribution of Samarendra in promoting literary movement in the State were highlighted by speakers at the anniversary event held at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen wherein Council’s chief advisor Dr M Nara, president Ph Gunachandra Sharma and Theatre Centre Manipur president Wareppa Naba were the chief guest, functional president and guest of honour respectively.


While Naba described Samarendra as an artiste and a revolutionary with strong resolve to nurture the society and ameliorate condition of Manipuri women, Dr Nara suggested that Somorendro’s plays be staged at the annual Winter Festival (Ningtham Kumhei) in order to spread his message far and wide.


Cultural programmes including traditional dance and songs were also presented to commemorate the anniversary.

At Manipur press Club, the observance function was held with Leikol president Dr Kh sorojini Devi and event host president Prof Jodhchandra Sanasam as the chief guest and president respectively.


Remembering Samarendra as a humble but visionary individual, dr Sorojini said effective literary works was one of the outstanding qualities of the multi-faceted Samarendra.


Delivering the key-note address, Forum general secretary Rakesh naorem informed the gathering that the death anniversary function was also held in Tripura with a delegation of the Forum joining in the observance.
