Imphal, June 02 2013: Taking serious note of the growing crime against women in New Delhi, the latest being the alleged murder of a Manipur girl Reingamphy Awungshi, Women Action for Development (Wad) is set to place the matter before the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women (UNSRVAW) Rashida Manjoo and the National Human Rights Commission for redressal.

The body of 21-year-old Reingamphy of Ukhrul district’s Chuithui village with some external injury marks was found inside her rented room in South Delhi on May 29 .

North East students strongly protested against the Delhi police’s inaction to deal with the case and their alleged attempt to side step the issue by registering it as a case of suicide.

On Saturday, Delhi Minister of Health, Women and Family Welfare Kiran Walia told the protesters that she had asked the Delhi police Commissioner to transfer the case to the Crime Branch.

Walia also informed that she had asked for conducting autopsy on Awungshi’s body again by different doctors in another hospital.

“This is not the first time, women particularly from the North East, have suffered various forms of violence in New Delhi.

We take the matter very seriously,” said Wad Secretary Sobita Mangsatabam.

“We will raise the matter to UNSRVAW Rashida Manjoo so that the panel asks the Central Government to work out a specific mechanism to check the menace,” Sobita said.

Stating that a team of National Human Rights Commission ( NHRC) would be visiting Manipur shortly, she said the same issue would be raised before the panel.

Pointing out that a huge number of North East students and professionals are staying at New Delhi, Sobita, nevertheless, appealed to the parents and guardians to get detailed information previously about the location where their wards are supposed to stay.

“The parents should study the location first before sending their children and if it is not secure they have to find safe areas,” Sobita said while strongly condemning the suspected murder of the Ukhrul girl.

She also urged the Central and State Governments to book the perpetrators of the crime according to the law of the land.

Various student bodies of the State said the Government should act immediately to punish the guilty.

In April, Rashida attended a meeting in Imphal where over 200 delegates and family members of women victims of violence from all over the North East region and West Bengal gave their testimonies.
