No Let Up In Demand To Enforce Inner Line Permit System Sitins held, students join demand chorus

Imphal, June 11 2013: As a part of the ongoing campaign demanding implementation of inner line permit (ILP) system in Manipur, sit-in demonstrations were held at Thangmeiband and Checkon areas today.


Extending morale support to the movement spearheaded by ILPS Joint Committee students of Ananda Singh Higher Secondary School staged a sit-in-protest at the school campus under the aegis of the Committee’s student wing.


A student protestor cautioned that unrestrained entry of non Manipuris into the state not only poses great threat to the survival of the indigenous populace but will also significantly change the demography.


Noting that in certain pockets of the State population of non-Manipuris has surpassed that of the indigenous community, the student emphasised on the need for contribution from every section of the society in checking entry of non-locals.

Referring to enforcement of ILP system in some States of the region, he questioned reluctance of the Government in bringing in a legislation to effectively check entry of non-Manipuris into the State.


At thangmeiband Apunba Leikai community hall a day long sit-in protest was organised jointly by Khwai Lamphel Women’s Development Organisation and women’s bodies (meira paibis) of Lalambung Makhong Takhellambam Leikai and Khoirom Leikai.


a woman participant alleged that Government of Manipur is not willing to implement ILP in the state as some politicians rely on votes of non-locals to get elected during elections.

Taking into account rapid change in the demography and overwhelming presence of non-Manipuris time has come for the politicians to think for the future of Manipur rather than compromise the people’s aspiration to gain political mileage, she advised.


Demanding that State Government do the needful for implementation of ILP in Manipur at the earliest, the protestor also pledged support and cooperation of the women organisations in the ILP committee’s campaign.
